  • Are you a rock star? Or do you like to play one every now and then? Sid & Nancy has the goods to complete your look, at prices even a struggling musician can afford. Although they stock plenty of second-hand and vintage goods, don’t miss edgy pieces made by local designers who are often employees of the shop. Sid and Nancy is also a fab place to shop for out of the ordinary gifts, home accessories and even art. A punk rock onesie would make the perfect baby gift for that uptight, mother-to-be at your office, n’est-ce pas?

  • Sure, it’s a drive (unless you’re in the Northeast), but it’s so worth it. Babysitter night? Check. Doggie dinner night featuring amazing food and wine for grown-ups and specially-prepared three-course meals for pups? Check. Fun and informative wine dinners? Mais oui! Make sure to go with a crowd so you can order one of everything and taste it all. From amuse-bouche to dessert, including everything in between, the food at Solstice is an incredible treat. Don’t be shy about ordering something different; trust the chef. The Shop Tart loved her rosemary-infused goat cheese ice cream over apple pie. Loved!

Terra

Terra's patio, early evening.

  • 100 State Street, West Columbia
  • 803-791-3443
  • Chef Mike Davis is known for his use of local food and the delicious things he does with it. The wine dinners at Terra are legendary, the perfect way to learn something new, enjoy an excellent meal expertly paired with wine, and have a blast while you’re at it. Manager Howard is a certified Wine Specialist and would love to help you choose the perfect wine for your meal any night of the week. The staff is darn knowledgeable, too, so he must be giving them a few tips. Look for fab specials like Pizza and Pinot Wednesdays (a glass of pinot and a wood-fired pizza for only $12). Although Terra is perfect any time of the year, don’t miss spring, summer and fall nights on the patio, where there is often live music. The Shop Tart thinks it’s high time we refer to State Street as Columbia’s own mad chic “Left Bank.” Terra is the fab anchor. The food is amazing and the wine well-chosen, but there’s nothing stuffy about Terra, where the Shop Tart always has a ball! And don’t forget the cocktails! Barman Andy can mix with the best of them.

VanJean

VanJean.

  • 2734 Devine Street
  • 803-252-4339
  • VanJean may be the most cutting edge boutique in South Carolina, maybe even in the entire region. They discovered modern genius Phillip Lim before Barney’s or Neiman Marcus. Those ladies have fab fashion instincts and they want to share them with you. Love the dress, can’t figure out how to wear it? They can suggest the perfect accessories to make you look like you just stepped off the runway. Need a more classic look? They once helped the Shop Tart find the perfect outfit for a funeral in less than fifteen minutes (and she was the best-dressed lady at the church. Ahem.) VanJean’s prices vary, too, so don’t be afraid. They have a knack for discovering emerging designers we can afford. If you want a real deal, keep your eyes open for the sale at the beginning of every season, where clothes from last year are marked down by as much as 90%. Does a $1000 coat ever really go out of style? And wouldn’t you like to own it for $100? Look for Shop Tart favorites like Phillip Lim, Loeffler Randall, Tracy Reese, Tibi, Milly, Elijah, Liquid and more.

Verve Interiors

Verve!

  • 1127 Gregg Street
  • 803-790-0045
  • Verve Interiors is more than just design: Their retail space is a treasure trove of beautiful things, from the perfect lamp or sconce to complete a room to original paintings by local artists, bedding to die for and the ottoman your sofa has been missing. And if you do need design help — and who doesn’t need professional advice every so often? — the ladies of Verve are happy to help. Owner and designer Ford Boyd Bailey, designers Sumner Holman, Margo Orlandini, Joan Boyer, and Christy Edens, and manager Stephanie Abernethy will be happy to help you transform your entire home. But don’t be shy. Those of us on a budget can take advantage of their fabulous style, too. If you have a larger budget, they can do a room or two. And if you need to make small changes here and there to pull the room together, Verve is a great place to go.
