But not everybody can be a winner. Isn’t that sad? Bat maybe you can be a winner. The Shop Tart has two tickets to give away to the Central Carolina Community Foundation’s latest fun event, Eat, Drink and Give Local, coming up this Thursday, May 23rd, in the First Citizens Courtyard on Main Street. All the Shop Tart’s favorite things! She was there last year and had a blast. All the cool kids were there.
According to the press release, because it’s Monday morning and some of us are feeling lazy…
Young Professionals Invited to Learn About Philanthropy at “Eat, Drink and Give Local” Event
Columbia, S.C. (May 9, 2013) — Central Carolina Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization serving 11 counties in the Midlands by helping charitable individuals and businesses meet the needs of our community, will wrap up its 2013 Food & Wine Series by giving Midlands young professionals a taste of philanthropy. The event, called “Eat, Drink & Give Local,” will take place from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the First Citizens Courtyard at 1230 Main Street in downtown Columbia.
At “Eat, Drink & Give Local,” guests will enjoy food, beverages and music from DJ GLDFNGR while learning more about how local charities are helping to make the Midlands a better place to live, work and play.
The evening will feature a fun way for guests to better understand how the Foundation works. Each attendee will participate in helping to decide to what organization the Community Foundation will award a $2,500 grant at the end of the evening.
The event will include tasting tables featuring craft beers and wines in addition to tasty offerings from 2108 State Street Bar & Grill, Jimmy John’s, Let’s Cook Culinary Studio, Spotted Salamander Catering, Thirsty Fellow and more.
Tickets are only $30 and may be purchased through May 22 at www.yourfoundation.org. Guests must be at least 21 years of age to attend. All proceeds assist the Community Foundation in awarding grants to nonprofits in the Midlands.

And now for some suhrrrrious art.

The Shop Tart is going to the South Carolina Arts Gala. You already know this, because she keeps telling you. But here’s the thing! You should go. She went to the preview last night and the art is better than ever.
The preview was led by Harriet Green, program director for visual arts, and Ken May, executive director of the South Carolina Arts Commission. Several of the artists were there, too.
Here’s what you need to know about tonight’s party:
- You can get tickets online or, as far as the Shop Tart knows, at the door. They are $75.
- Food by Anna Kline catering (delicious!) and open bar are included.
- The large room at 701 Whaley Street is full of art that is priced to buy, and the first person who puts a little red sticker on it gets it. No bidding allowed (though you may be able to make a deal with the lucky buyer in the parking lot). The pieces in that room are all priced at $1,000 or less.
- In the smaller room, there are pieces up for auction. These will go for more than $1,000, in many cases a lot more, but do take a look, because you never know!
- The dress code is cocktail and, from past experience, the Shop Tart has noticed that it’s not the dressiest of cocktail wear. Just wear something you love, because it’s really all about the art.
- The event starts at 7 pm. If you want to buy some of the pieces in the big room, get there at 7. Or camp out!
This piece by David Yaghjian is in the auction room. Can you give the Shop Tart some money so she can bid on it? If she remembers correctly, bidding starts around $1,700.

One of the coolest auction pieces was a pair of trees, by topiary artist Pearl Fryar. The trees come with one free pruning, within one year, and personal instruction from the artist himself. Pearl Fryar is also the 2013 Special Verner Award winner.
The Shop Tart is also totally obsessed with this sculpture by Winston Wingo, whose work you may remember from 701 CCA’s SC Biennial 2011 Exhibition. She saw the back first…
…and immediately thought of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s spheres.
Lo and behold, check out Wingo’s video here, Man vs. Machine, where he totally references Pomodoro. So there you go. And…the front!
Speaking of artists, some of them will be there tonight. Don’t be shy. If there’s a piece that interests you, ask around, and you may be able to meet the person who created it.
Speaking of art in general — don’t be shy! Look, ask questions and don’t hesitate to express an opinion. Don’t feel bad if something is out of your price range — you can still like it. And do consider coming to the gala tonight. The tickets aren’t cheap, but the price is fair, and you’ll have a great time. (Plus: No need to eat or drink before or after — there’s plenty for everyone!)
Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!
