Austral!

  • 2100 Beltline Boulevard
  • 1085 Lake Murray Boulevard, Irmo
  • 803-790-0770, 803-781-6426
  • So, Austral has this reputation for being high-end, fancy-schmancy, the place to go for fabulous hair…if you can afford it. Guess what. You can! They offer cuts from $30. All stylists are under the supervision of owner Tim Shealy. Shop Tart Tip: Going to a junior stylist at an upscale salon is an excellent value. Austral isn’t just about hair - they also do special occasion makeup and facial waxing (No, we don’t like to talk about it. But we have to do it. Shouldn’t we do it in a beautiful salon with fresh coffee and lovely lighting?). Austral is the perfect place to go for a stunning, polished look for a big event. Be sure to inquire about all of the treatments they offer; the Shop Tart is a huge fan of their Keratin straightening treatment. The treatment removes 85 to 95% of frizz and makes your mane low-maintenance for four to six months. Heaven! Among other products, Austral carries Phyto, a Shop Tart favorite for it’s amazing ability to tame her mane and super-stylish packaging.

Marshmallow shooters? Of course. Play kitchens and art supplies? Absolutely. The staff is great at helping you choose the perfect gift for any child. And Be Beep is the best source in town for Legos. (Better than the big box stores. And the Shop Tart, a mother of three boys, knows about these things.) BEE Maternal

Lilac can be worn at every stage of your glowing journey, including afterward. (Really!) They’re housed in the same building as Bumble Boutique, so you can outfit your baby (and any other children you might have crawling about) without making an extra trip!

Bohemian (Clothing Boutique)

Bohemian!

  • 707 Saluda Avenue in Five Points
  • 803-256-0629
  • Bohemian is one of Columbia’s hippest and longest-standing boutiques. They were edgy and modern before anyone else, catering to a younger crowd, girls who were tired of shopping with their mothers. They stock plenty of lines that are fun and won’t break the bank. If you want a unique look that’s also beautiful, Bohemian is for you. They also have lots of great basics, like knit shirts in every style and color you need. Look for brands like Sine, BB Dakota (always less than it should be!), Frock by Tracy Reece, Free People and more. The jewelry is also fabulous. Owner Denise also makes sure to include locally designed goods like Hermosa jewelry and scarves and hats from Softspoken. Located on Saluda Avenue, the shop is in the heart of Five Points, the very first cool district in Columbia. And it isn’t just for kids - the Shop Tart has scored many a fab item there for herself, and she’s old enough to be your mother. (But she won’t make you dress funny.)

Bumble Boutique

Bumble Boutique.

  • 4840 Forest Drive
  • 803-233-9703
  • Bumble Boutique carries a fab selection of children’s clothing. They stock loads of adorable things for the younger set, sure, but the Shop Tart was thrilled to find chinos, bathing suits, seersucker and more for her older boys, who are notoriously hard to outfit locally. And they even had a treasure chest to keep the three-year-old occupied while his brothers shopped. Look for everything from classic cotton day gowns for babies and adorably modern sleepers to reversible Twirly Girl dresses (the kind the Shop Tart would have DIED for) and Shop Tart favorite Tea from San Francisco. They also have a fab selection of toys, books and gifts, perfect for birthdays, bribes or any other occasion. Bumble Boutique is housed in the same space as B.E.E. Maternal, which makes it the perfect one-stop shopping experience.

Cashua Coffee

Cafe Strudel.

  • Locally roasted Cashua Coffee is the bomb. The Shop Tart couldn’t make it through the day without a shot or three in the morning. She likes it so much, she has it delivered. And you can, too! Order online and they’ll bring it right to your door. There’s something deliciously traditional about having coffee delivered to your door by an actual human, n’est-ce pas? Kind of like the milkmen of yore. Want to try them all? They offer a subscription. If you just can’t plan ahead, Cashua is available in stores - by the bag at Rosewood Market and by the cup at Cafe Strudel and Art Shack.

Casual Living

Casual Living.

  • Casual Living is the perfect place for all your outdoor entertaining needs, from that fab iron bench - and the cushions to go with it - to acrylic glasses in every shape and size…and cool outdoor lighting fixtures…and tablecloths…umbrellas…blankets for cool nights on the porch. In fact, she votes for a re-naming: Fab Party Living. She admits “Casual Living” has a nicer ring to it, but still. Casual Living is the perfect place to go when you want to seem casual as you entertain with mad style. Don’t miss the acrylic servers and glasses, durable enough for the pool, chic enough for any table, inside or out.

  • 830 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia

  • If you need it for a party, they have it. Punch bowls? Check. China? A stage? Audio equipment? Check, check and check. A tent to cover your entire back yard? With a chandelier? Absolutely! They love a challenge and if you’ve seen it somewhere, they can make it happen. Family owned and operated, Celebrations is the oldest special event rental business in Columbia. For more than thirty years, they’ve been making events happen, from festivals to weddings. They’re based in the Midlands and ready to serve customers all over South Carolina. Cellar on Greene

Cellar on Greene Cellar on Greene

  • 2001 Greene Street
  • 803-303-3343
  • Love wine? Love Cellar on Greene, the wine shop where you can taste, socialize and try before you buy. Watch for great wine sales, fun events like Champagne Tuesday (how can the Shop Tart not love that?) and food and wine specials almost every night of the week. The small plates are perfect for an after-work or late-night snack…or order three and call it a meal. Take advantage of the staff’s wine knowledge and frequent in-store tastings and you’ll be a pro in no time, with a rapidly-growing wine cellar. Grab a spot at the bar or one of the long, communal tables and make friends. S’fun!

Coplon’s

Coplon's.

  • 4825 Forest Drive
  • 790-0015
  • Coplon’s is iconic. They’ve been bringing the very best of fashion to Columbia for thirty years. Look for exclusive established collections such as Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, Lanvin, Lela Rose, Diane Von Furstenberg, Alice and Olivia, Theory, Stuart Weitzman, Temple St. Clair, Chloe, Stella McCartney, Valentino and Christian Louboutin, as well as new emerging designers such as Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, Yigal Azrouel and Elizabeth and James. They also have a fab makeup and skincare department stocked with products from Trish McEvoy and Darphin. The Shop Tart can be found lurking in the shoe department, right by the Louboutins, waiting for a sale. Their sales are legendary and the sales staff is friendly, helpful and unpretentious. (Don’t be shy about asking for the sale merchandise - and don’t miss the back room, often filled to bursting with heavily discounted things from seasons past!)

Cromer's

  • 1700 Huger Street

  • Guaranteed worst in town. Why? Because nobody does it like Cromer’s, a South Carolina institution known for flavored popcorn, peanuts, candy apples and party supplies. They’re celebrating their 75th Anniversary in 2010, and when it comes to local shopping, it doesn’t get much better than a business that’s been owned by the same family for 75 years. Cromer’s has everything you need to create a carnival at school, at church or - why not? - right in your very own home.

DiPrato's

  • 342 Pickens Street
  • 779-0606
  • DiPrato’s is known as a great place for lunch and brunch and for good reason. It’s always bustling and you won’t hate waiting in line because they usually have pimento cheese and DiPrato’s amazing pita chips out for sampling. The deli is a Shop Tart favorite for takeout. Throw a party at a moment’s notice without cooking a thing - they have you covered, with everything from chicken salad and hummus to fried stuffed artichokes, deviled crab and roasted broccolini. And do not forget the made to order crispy pita chips; the Shop Tart recommends keeping them in the back seat of your car or they won’t make it home. Service at DiPrato’s is always beyond friendly, the food is always delicious and they have a great selection of wine!

Dianne’s

Bar Snacks at Dianne's
The Ultimate Wedge Salad at Dianne's.

  • 2400 Devine Street
  • 254-3535
  • You might find it odd that the Shop Tart chose pictures of bar snacks and a classic wedge salad for Dianne’s, where the amazing menu, friendly and respectful service and superb wine list shine any night of the week, except for Sunday. Why are they closed on Sunday? Well, Dianne herself has to rest sometime and she is almost always there to greet you when you walk in the door and bid you adieu when you leave. Dianne’s is also great for parties or private dinners. And don’t miss your chance to go retro-fabulous at Dianne’s during special events. But the bar snacks? The best in town. Olives, marinated mozzarella, perfect cocktail peanuts - you never know what you’ll find. And the wedge is legendary. Do join the Shop Tart some time for a little “Wedge and W(h)ine.” Divine! If you love “Mad Men” like the Shop Tart does, Dianne’s is your place. And…they run amazing dinner specials. In March, enjoy three courses for $30, including lots of favorites from the menu.
