Summer Hair.

Beofre the Shop Tart headed to the beach, she was scheduled to have her hair cut and colored at the Tillman Salon. Yes, the Shop Tart’s hair is colored. Funny thing, she didn’t start coloring it until about a year ago. Her hair is so long, the bottom part was lighter from the sun and she had roots at the top that were much darker, because they hadn’t been exposed to the sun yet. So people thought she colored it. And now she does, but nobody ever asks her if it’s her natural color. Because it finally looks natural. And get used to it, because the color is on file, she likes it, and plans to rock it to the grave.

She didn’t have time to get another Keratin straightening treatment from Austral before leaving for the beach, so Wesley at Tillman did an Aveda glossing treatment. The Shop Tart has no idea what the glossing treatment is supposed to do, but she finds that it gives her extra shine and smooths her hair just enough if she hasn’t had Keratin in a while. One of the main advantages of Keratin is that her hair gets less tangled, very important when she’s spending the week at the beach. The glossing treatment definitely helped with that. The treatment is $20 with any color service, $40 on its own. At Tillman, she also spotted this Aveda Sun Care Protective Sun Veil ($26). The Shop Tart loves spray stuff to use at the beach. Besides, now that she colors her hair, she needs to protect it, right? She loves this stuff: It has a nice clean scent and kept her hair shiny as all get out, all week long. She also imagines it might offer some sun protection to her scalp. (Even though she loves it when her dermatologist checks her scalp for sun damage, because it feels so good, she doesn’t want her to find any!) It protected her color and she plans to use this every single day, on or off the beach. Shiny hair is fun!

Post-beach trip, she finally had time to return to Austral for another Keratin straightening treatment. (Want to see a “Before” pic? Look at the photo at the bottom of this post. That was before she ever discovered the joy of Keratin.) Her stylist, Jennifer Lineberger, is a recent graduate of Paul Mitchell the School in the Vista. How fabulously hip is it that the school is in the Vista? Total urban sophistication. Call her an uninformed snob, but the Shop Tart loves the idea of a downtown beauty school. It just seems cool. Also? Convenient. How about a shampoo and blow-out for $10 to $15 right after work? The school is a great place to score all kinds of treatments and services for next to nothing; check out their menu here.

Speaking of inexpensive, how about free? If you have never been to Austral and call to make an appointment with Jennifer, you can get a cut and color for free. Absolutely free. (And free is nice, but the Shop Tart respectfully recommends that you tip anyway.) Call 790-0770 for an appiountment with Jennifer at Austral’s new location, 2100 Beltline (the former home of H2). Jennifer did a great job on the Shop Tart’s Keratin treatment, even though it was her very first. The Shop Tart has a whole lot of hair, so Jennifer should probably count this as her first three. Below is the a picture of her coiffe, one day post-treatment, when she had just rolled out of bed. It survived the night with nary a tangle. And now you know what the Shop Tart’s pajamas look like. (Don’t feel too special, the whole neighborhood knows what they look like, along with the UPS guy, the alarm company guy, her children’s teachers and anyone else who might see her before 10 am.)

At Austral, the Shop Tart spotted another sun protective spray for hair: Phyto Plage Protective Sun Veil ($23). This one has a lovely, light floral smell. She plans to alternate it with the Aveda spray. It’s a little lighter, so would be great for someone who doesn’t want to add any oil to their style.

So, how’s your hair? Not loving it? Get a Keratin treatment before you hit the beach again. The Shop Tart has them every few months and adores the time they save. She can blow-dry her own hair in 15 minutes, instead of 40. She has even been known to wash it before bed, go to sleep with it wet and wake up to hair that needs nothing more than a quick touch-up with a flatiron. Heaven! Tell Jennifer the Shop Tart says, “Hello!”

Tomorrow, Austral is hosting a national Phyto representative, who will be there to offer free hair analysis, advice and product samples. Call for an appointment, as the rep will be busy! And how about hair for children? Bumble Boutique’s ABC sale is going strong. Today, “H” is for “Hair” and all hair accessories are 25 percent off.

Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!

Whew! I have now *finally* caught up on reading all the Shop Tart columns I’d missed during the beach trip last week. (Body surfing and cooking shrimps took precedence, as you know!)

O’s column is so fantastic! I wanted to leave a comment but there is no “Leave a Reply” box. Oh technology. Go O!

Oh, and: yeah girl, your gorgeous hair is quite an entity!
