The Shop Tart thinks Christmas should be on Friday every year because it makes for a nice, festive weekend. Today, don’t just sit around in your pajamas. The All-Local Farmers’ Market is open until noon, so get on down there and pick up something awesome for dinner. Even if you don’t want to shop, enjoy Gervais and Vine’s quiche and grits made from all local ingredients at the market. Yum, yum, yum. Although the Shop Tart is tempted to stay in her pajamas and eat leftover food from Yummy Yummy II, she plans to head out soon. (Every Christmas Eve, which happens to be Mr. Shop Tart’s birthday, they host a feast with takeout from Yummy Yummy II, quite possibly the best Chinese takeout in town. In the photo below, you can also see the Shop Tart’s china pattern, Wedgewood Amherst. She doesn’t really like it. She doesn’t hate it, but it bores her a little. She’s been contemplating selling it and choosing something new. Most of her relatives gave her silver, not china. One of her grandmother’s gave her a bowl, but it broke years ago. Would it be OK to let the pattern go? Discuss.)

Dinner from Yummy Yummy II.

Do go out and enjoy the day. After all, the weather is a little better than it was yesterday. The Shop Tart’s parents’ yard was half underwater. (Ten points to the first person to spot the living creature in the photo below.)

Christmas Day.

Most stores are open and the hard-core sales have begun. Years ago, the Shop Tart and her roommate enjoyed going to Atlanta just after Christmas to hit the sales and a bar or three. One memorable New Year’s Eve (well, memorable for them), they went there, met up with a couple of guys they knew from Columbia (but not very well) and ended up at a most excellent party. One of the hosts was wearing a coat and tie. (Unusual in those days. Unusually HOT.) He was quizzing guests like Alex Trebek. Somehow, it was incredibly sexy. Funny how the mind works. The Shop Tart is pretty sure she would still get hot and bothered over a scruffily good-looking guy in a coat and tie imitating Alex Trebek, especially if he got the questions right. *swoon* That same year, she scored an incredible deal on a ribbed cashmere turtleneck sweater at J. Crew. She still has the sweater, but cannot remember Jeopardy Boy’s name. It’s quite possible she and her roommate giggled in the corner and were never formally introduced. Anyhow…

Stores are open, so check the sales. The Shop Tart is going to spend the next hour or so updating the calendar. If you don’t see a sale listed at your favorite shop, never fear. If they’re open, they’re having a sale. The days after Christmas are the best time to get the most bang for your gift certificate bucks. So go on! Let this be your shopping and partying guardian angel. She has stood on top of the tree of les parents Shop Tart for as long as she can remember. And she looks like Courtney Love, dressed up as an angel.

Angel.

So, if you score any great deals today, please share in the comments section. The Shop Tart wants to know!

Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!

    A pine tree is a living creature….

Sell (eBay, Craigslist, Replacements) or consign your china (Roundabouts does china and just moved to the old Steinmart on Two Nothc up by Polo Road, I believe). Then, better option, see if you can score a used set (or pieces you actually use) on eBay, Craigslist, etc. –or just buy new–I still suggest buying only what you use– another cool thing is to buy each course’s dishes in a different but complementary pattern–so salad, dessert, coffee cups and saucers-demitasse is correct anyway for most times you’re using fine china, soup, dinner plates–all different if you want.

My “wedding”china is Arzberg white–the Bauhaus-designed coupe all-white pattern that was also my mom’s in 1952. We use them as our regular dishes, with other pieces mixed in–like some Isaac Mizrahi for Target salad plates that are white porcelain with different solid-colored tops….and some Rosenthal with a raised tone-on-tone modern pattern….

Uhm, terrifyingly large spider to the right? Is it crawling on me? I think it’s crawling on me.

While I have the utmost respect for your desire to shop locally and try to do the same myeslf, RueLala and HauteLook and sometimes Gilt have fun china patterns that go on sale sometimes. If you’re looking for a more “fun” pattern, they had the Marc Jacobs for (Waterford? Wedgewood? I can’t remember) on RueLaLa not too long ago, it’s awesome. Awesome. I personally wouldn’t get rid of yours as you never know when you’re going to need to entertain stuffy guests, but rather get a fun cheaper more playful pattern. But then again what do I know? I am 25 and use my overpriced Kate Spade China on my husband’s old $100 Dining Table from Kmart. The place settings don’t even really fit…oy.

Kathryn - LOVE the idea of mixing patterns. I think selling my old stuff on Ebay would open up a world of possibility. I do have loads of plain white, restaurant style dishes bought on sale at World Market. They go with my china and look nice alone, too.

Carlie - this has nothing to do with toys, but those cookies you left were awesome! Thank you!

Amy - You win! And also made me laugh out loud. And read your comment out loud to my sis, who also laughed.

Nora - Ooh, didn’t even think of those sites. Good call. As for the stuffy guests, I’ve realized if you hand them a drink at the door, they get over your chine. LOL By the way, thanks for your advice the other day!

I’m also jonesing for the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion white pottery….you put me onto the glassware at Cloud Nine–I think they may also have the dishes. They have been featured on several of my modernist house blogs, especially Remodelista.

Also, there are some cool potters on Etsy who make dishes….or the Old Mill Antique Mall!
