Beach reads for now, shoes for later.
Summer isn’t over yet. The sales are still on and there are still hours to be spent reading by the pool or on the beach. The Shop Tart recently enjoyed Commencement, by J. Courtney Sullivan. She went to Smith College and wrote a book about…a group of friends who went to Smith College. The Shop Tart thinks it’s just fine to write about what you already know. In any case, the book was a quick read and the story was interesting enough, kind of like a good episode of Law and Order.
In the airport in London, the Shop Tart spent a few moments perusing the racks of British chick lit. As you know, she isn’t ashamed to admit her joy at reading fluffy books. The plots run together and the characters are all more or less the same, so reading the novels requires very little energy. They get extra points if they make her laugh a couple of times (See: Sophie Kinsella and Jennifer Weiner
). She relished the idea of a new lot of her favorite kind of relaxing reading and many of the British versions don’t make it here. On the plane, she enjoyed Jill Mansell
’s Rumour Has It (notice adorable spelling of “rumour,” please).
Now that you have your mindless pool reading, you need one more thing before you slip into your swimsuit - after piling on sunscreen of course - and head to the water. Those detergents specifically for swimsuits really do work and you need to use one every time you swim. Would you dunk your favorite dress in salt water or chlorine and just wear it again without washing? Would you even do that to a t-shirt? No, you would not. The swimwear detergents are gentler on stretchy fabrics and color. When you come in after a day by the water, throw your suit in the sink with a cap full of The Laundress’ Swimwear Care, available at Pout. Bonus: It smells really nice.
Alas, summer is coming to an end and you’re going to want need more shoes, n’est-ce pas? Bye-bye, flip-flops. Kicks has great boots at an astoundingly low price already, but maybe you aren’t ready for those just yet (You might want to go ahead and get them, though, because at under $100 a pair, they will not last). You’ll need some transition shoes, sooner than you think. These Tibi sandals are on sale and there are still a couple pair left. They’re from summer, but they’re suede. We South Carolina ladies are lucky enough to have warm weather for a while and these could be just the thing for late summer and early fall.
This pair by Cynthia Vincent could work into fall as well and the Shop Tart thinks they are very, very cool. Very.
Purple is still mad chic this fall, so how about these?
Or these? They’re only $60. That’s a lot of fashion for a few dollars.
Metallic studs are all over everything for fall and you can start wearing them right now. These flats rock. That color is definitely multi-seasonal.
Looking for a perfect pair of classic pumps? Want something a little more interesting? Kate Spade is feeling you, girl. Love, love, love these brown suede heels with animal print accents.
Too racy? They also come in black. These pumps have a classic, beautiful shape and you’ll wear them until you wear them out completely.
These are also new by Kate Spade and the Shop Tart thinks they are stunning.
L.A.M.B., Gwen Stefani’s line, is super-hot this year and there were two pair that gave the Shop Tart chills. Is she the only person that shivers when she sees something especially awesome? Yes? Oh, well. Cheap thrills. These are awesome, y’all. Bonus: You could wear them now, into fall and again next spring.
This pair, also by L.A.M.B., is the perfect way to show off your pretty pedicure through fall, n’est-ce pas?
Although we aren’t quite ready for boots yet, except for maybe the Shop Tart’s peep-toe eyelet boots which she’s already rocking, over-the-knee boots will be essential for fall, so get used to it. The Shop Tart will keep her eye out and let you know when she starts seeing them in stores. Mwah!
Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!

Where did the Shop Tart get her peep toe eyelet boots? I am ready for fall- I need (well, want) another pair of boots that are really cute for the fall, but also comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time and being on my feet a lot. I am also short at 5′3″”, so any extra height I can get the better. I can’t spend too much money either or my husband will get really nervous. Thanks again to Kathryn for all her awesome suggestions about make up for a very pale faced blond.
Also, if you know my husband keep it hush, hush please. A girl has got to have her fashion and beauty style and secrets!
I think I need a top secret fashion/ beauty checking account!
Any suggestions for a good shampoo with silicone? And is it okay use this? I heard it helps with the frizzies.
Ashley - I haven’t tried it yet, but Austral gave me the shampoo and conditioner with the treatment - it’s called Keratin Complex and does contain silicone. I’ll let you know how it goes!
Susanne - I got the boots in France
But I know Kicks always has a great, varied selection. You should check them out when you’re here!
