There is a coffee shop near where the Shop Tart’s sister lives in Washington, D.C. It’s called Tryst and it’s very, very cool. It’s almost too cool for the Shop Tart, but she sucks it up and goes anyway. Close to the University, Nickelodeon Cinema and hip-as-hell Hunter Gatherer, Immaculate Consumption is Columbia’s answer to Tryst. Sure, certain elements are missing, like free wi-fi, but if you sit in the right spot, you can usually get that anyway. The coffee is excellent, the salads are nice and fresh and the people watching is pretty good - you’ll find an interesting mix of students and professors and professionals and government employees, since it’s right behind the statehouse.

Mr. Shop Tart is a die-hard fan of the Bahn Mi Sandwich special - a variation on a Vietnamese dish. If the Shop Tart eats a sandwich in the middle of the day, she has to take a nap, so she ordered it as a salad. Although the guy taking her order didn’t quite understand that she wanted salad instead of chips or pasta, the usual sides, it was still delicious. The Shop Tart understands - these things can be confusing. That carrot and daikon relish on top is worth relishing!

As an interesting aside, you can get Mexican Coca-Cola at Immaculate, prized for its sugar content. Good old American Coke is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, a definite health no-no. Not that Coke is every healthy exactly, but some sodas are better than others!

Just like everyone in the entire world, the Shop Tart is addicted to Facebook. Will somebody please stop her? Or just join her for lunch next time so she’ll have an actual human to talk to?

Oh, Facebook!

Just to be cool and fit in with the academic crowd, the Shop Tart did do some actual work, so if anyone asked what she was doing, she could give brush her forehead with a delicate finger and give a world-weary answer, “Writing.” How sophisticated is that?

In other news…

  • Bruce Lawrence, part of yesterday’s Look of the Week - you remember, he was the dude - gave the Shop Tart the lowdown on what he was wearing: Seven jeans and a Ralph Lauren black corduroy blazer and Kenneth Cole shoes. In typical dude fashion, he had no idea about the shirt. The Shop Tart, however, is thrilled that he sent her the information, because there’s an important lesson here for gentlemen. The jeans matter! Yes, they do, so get good ones. Try Max and Prissy for hip, well-cut men’s jeans, m’kay? Just do it!
  • This just in: There will be a benefit concert this evening for USC Dance Marathon to raise funds for Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital.  The concert will be held at the Clubhouse in the Vista. There is a $5 cover charge and everything goes to DM. The Blue Laws, known for their fun covers, are the headlining band. Sounds like a great plan!
  • For all you swell dames, there’s a scotch tasting at Tombo Grille tonight at 6 pm. Brett from Ben Arnold will be there to tell you exactly what it is you might like about three single malts from Scotland. Or you could just go to see if there are any single men from right here in town…ahem…just a suggestion. They also have a fab wine list.
  • Claire Bateman, the author of “How Christmas Began” and “This Little Light of Mine” will be at Little Lambs and Ivy on Friday, from 1 to 3 pm to sign copies of both books. These make great holiday gifts for children!
  • No matter how you feel about politics, you must admit that our president-elect is one good-looking, sharp-dressed man. President Elect Barack Obama has been known to wear a Hart Schaffner and Marx suit, like the one he wore election night. Guess what? Weathers of Columbia carries them, so why don’t you go get all presidential and treat yourself to one, gentlemen? Dreamy!
  • Help Just the Thing celebrate a 6th Anniversary today. Enjoy a glass of wine between 5 and 7 pm and shop for all the accessories you need to perfect your holiday party looks. And buy the Shop Tart a gold bangle or five while you’re at it!

Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!
