New Year’s Eve! Yay! So, what’s next?
Filed Under Uncategorized | 1 Comment
Made any resolutions yet? The Shop Tart has a recommendation. Why not resolve, once and for all, to make exercise part of your life? That’s right. Totally healthy advice. She once heard that not exercising was the health equivalent of smoking. (You could resolve to quit smoking, too, but having done that herself - three dang times before it took - she knows it isn’t always so easy.) The Shop Tart became an exerciser out of necessity* and she’s learned to love it. Her sweats of choice are classes with aerobics and weights, Pilates, yoga and the occasional jog. You can do whatever you like, just do something. Because the Shop Tart loves you.
This time of year, most gyms offer special incentives to new members. The Shop Tart recommends trying a gym for at least a week to see if you will actually go. It doesn’t matter how pretty it is, how much other people love it or how much you want to wear a bikini on spring break - if it doesn’t fit into your life, you won’t go. The Shop Tart made a few calls yesterday and found out about some of the specials available around town. This list is not exhaustive. She also recommends asking the manager or sales person what other deals they might offer. They want you and may be able to swing a sweeter deal. (And they might not be able to, so ask nicely and be gracious if they can’t. Shop Tart Tip: Always pretend your grandmother, your strictest grade-school teacher and your therapist are listening. Be polite. True Story: Someone is listening. This is a small town.) Here you go:
- H2 on Forest Drive is a gym for women. The gym is small, but they have it all: aerobics, yoga, Pilates, personal training, a beautiful oasis of a locker room, cardio machines (with cable!), weights, all the standard resistance machines, free coffee (!) and a salon and spa. During the month of January, they waive the usual $99 enrollment fee. They also offer a free week. (Click on the coupon below to go to a page with a larger version to print.)
- Hampton Hill Athletic Club, H2’s sister gym (or brother gym, as the case may be) is for men and women. They have all the same great amenities as H2, in a larger gym. They also waive the $99 enrollment fee in January and offer a free seven-day trial. (Full disclosure: The Shop Tart teaches a class at Hampton Hill and has taught at its sister gym, H2, in the past. Love them both.)
- Starting January 7th, the YMCA on Sumter Street will waive their $50 enrollment fee through the end of the month. They offer exercise equipment, aquatics (that means they have a pool, yo), group exercise, men’s and women’s training areas and more. If you work in the downtown area, this may be the most convenient option. Besides, they’re across the street from M Cafe. Yum!
- Stronghold on Huger Street isn’t just for climbing any more. They offer fitness classes, cardio machines, free weights and strength training equipment as well as a 40 foot climbing tower and two bouldering rooms (whatever those are). If you bring them thirty canned goods for Harvest Hope TODAY, you will get thirty days free membership. This is the last day to take advantage of that offer. They are open until 6 pm. Why not get a good workout before you go out tonight?
- BodyFit on Rosewood Drive is the place to go if group exercise with lots of encouragement from other members is your thing. They have a few cardio machines if you are short on time. Take advantage of their $20 gift certificate for two weeks of unlimited classes. (Just don’t give it as a gift, unless you are darn sure the person wants it. You knew that, right?) Their enrollment fee is only $10 and they don’t require contracts, although you do get a slight discount for signing up for automatic withdrawal. For an extra fee, you can also have access to the weight and machine room. Personal and group training is available. (Full Disclosure: When owner Nancy T. was still at the Firm on Harden Street, she was the Shop Tart’s very first fitness instructor, for which she will be forever grateful.)
- The Katie and Irwin Kahn Jewish Community Center, a beautiful facility in northeast Columbia, is offering discounts on all first year memberships and waiving the $100 initiation fee through the end of the month. They have it all, including a pool. (In case you were curious, you don’t have to be Jewish to join!)
- Your first class at Amsa Yoga on Pelham Drive is free and they are having a New Year’s challenge. If you complete nine Sunday classes (1 to 2:15 pm), you will receive a free three-class pass. The challenge class is suitable for all levels and begins January 3rd. Tomorrow, head to Amsa and start the New Year right with a class at 11 am (regular rates apply).
- City Yoga in Five Points is having a FREE weekend. January 2nd and 3rd, all classes are absolutely free. Get there early because space is limited and people will come in droves. The feeling of community at City Yoga is fantastic, so the crowd won’t make you crazy. (Full Disclosure: The Shop Tart used to be a regular there before she got really, really busy. She loved it and gives thanks for the training she got, which allows her to practice Yoga wherever and whenever the opportunity presents itself.)
- One-on-one personalized training is a great way to jumpstart a fitness resolution. Pilates instructor Ashley Hayes is offering three private sessions to Shop Tart readers for just $99. Call 803-800-6726 for your appointment as soon as possible. Whatever your regular fitness routine, you will love Pilates. If you’re new to exercise, it’s a great way to start. If you’re a fitness fanatic already, Pilates will help you bring more to your usual routine. (Full Disclosure: The Shop Tart started Pilates to get her abs back after Baby #2 and teaches mat classes now. She has never worked out with Ashley, but has heard great things. She knows Ashley personally and can tell you that an hour spent with her would be loads of fun, even if you had to do exercise.) (Even Fuller Disclosure: The Shop Tart never really had abs before Pilates, so she didn’t use it to get them back. She used it to get them.)
The Shop Tart would love to hear your personal gym recommendations and she knows your fellow readers would, too. After all, the choice is so individual, her personal recommendations would mean very little. Do share!
Another healthy thing you can resolve to do this year is support your local farmers at the All-Local Farmers’ Market beside 701 Whaley Street every Saturday from 8 am until noon. Last week, Mr. Shop Tart was one of only a handful of shoppers and scored this quiche, made with local ingredients by staff from Gervais and Vine. (The Shop Tart recently learned that Rosso and Gervais and Vine take turns. This Saturday, breakfast will be provided by Rosso. Compare and contrast. Fun!) They provide a $5 breakfast every Saturday, but no one was buying. Because they had extra, he scored this whole quiche for ten dollars. Ding dang, it made a delicious lunch. Be there this Saturday. It’s always a lot of fun!
Happy Shopping, Happy New Year and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!
P.S. Several times recently, the Shop Tart has been asked where to find both free wi-fi and beer and wine. This has led her to believe many of you share her work ethic. Last night, she posed the question to the Twitterverse and received the following answers.
- Flying Saucer. Wild Hare. (@gamecocksblog)
- There is free WiFi in the Vista. (@columbiasc)
- Try the Thirsty Fellow on Gadsden by Colonial Center or any bar on Lincoln Street in Vista WiFi zone. (@MadPlatter)
- flying saucer! (@spencersyfrig)
- Flying Saucer? (@Erinish3)
- The Flying Saucer! (@twitsie_julie)
- Flying Saucer!! (@c_w_s)
- Flying Saucer (@jamesrichter)
- Goatfeathers and the Whig come to mind for beer and wifi (and food) (@superbudgetcola)
- Cock and Bull, but it can be spotty. Cloud Nine, but they are not open late, so you need to be an afternoon drinker. Why not? (That one’s from the Shop Tart herself.)
Now you know!
P.P.S. She also received this information from @superbudgetcola: “Free taxi from 11pm-3am tomorrow (up to $10). http://bit.ly/54cQtz” And that was yesterday, so the free taxi is happening tonight. Be safe. Use it!
P.P.P.S. Still no plans for tonight? Last the Shop Tart heard, Terra had a few reservations left for tonight. Might not be true any more, but it’s worth a try!
* She was always more or less the same weight, barring her youthful flirtation with eating disorders, and then she had children. She gained eighty pounds with her first son, who was born ten weeks early due to her own chronic hypertension. She lost that weight in a few weeks by walking to and from the ice cream store once a day, but she was in her early twenties then. In her mid-twenties, she had another son and gained another eighty pounds in the process, just knowing it would come off easily. Not so much. He was six weeks early. Sometime in between the first and second child, she cleaned up her diet and became vigilant about her hypertension medication. After the second child, she started going to a gym when she was still heavier than Mr. Shop Tart at four months post-partum. (It’s not as easy to lose eighty pounds as one approaches thirty. Just so you know.) She ate more or less healthily - barring a few plates of her beloved fries - and exercised all the way through her third pregnancy, gaining only thirty pounds and producing a third son only three weeks early. Funny how that works. She still has not figured out how to make a girl.

The Shop Tart has a great job.

“yo. got nothing to write about 4 tomorrow. can i take u for a drink at rosso later? eightish”
That was the text the Shop Tart’s sister received yesterday evening. At first, she though her dear big sis was implying she would behave in such an interesting manner it would be worth sharing in a post. While the Shop Tart’s sis does like to party, she always does it in a mature and sophisticated manner. Just like her big sister, right? Right. So, the Shop Tart went out last night because it is her job*. She hadn’t been to Rosso in a while and her sister - who lives in Washington D.C. - had never been. Their emails about delicious oysters have been getting the Shop Tart all hot and bothered, so there you have it.
Buyer Susan had been working hard at VanJean doing inventory all day and needed to get out for a bit, so she was there, too. The Shop Tart’s brother, who was looking incredibly sharp, met them. Rosso was flipping packed. When they arrived at 7:30, they were told they would have to wait a half-hour for a table. (Rosso does take reservations, but they hadn’t made them. Natch.) Even the bar was packed, so they waited in the comfortable seating area by the door and enjoyed some fine people watching. Something about a big, stylish crowd makes the Shop Tart feel festive. The three parties seated in the raised booths were particularly attractive, which led the Shop Tart to wonder if appearance was taken into consideration when seating them. Anyhow, the Shop Tart started with a bottle of Caposaldo prosecco, which she had enjoyed before. Not all to herself, silly. She had eaten cabbage stew at home, so didn’t really need to eat more. But she loves food. She had the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. Is it just her or has the serving gotten larger? Whatever. It was awesome.
Her brother and sister had salads with fried mozarella. Those portions also seemed to be bigger than before.
Susan enjoyed the maltagali - hand-torn pasta in vegetable broth with fire-roasted tomatoes, spinach and an enormous dollop of lemon mascarpone. Y’all. So good. (Susan is wearing one of this season’s hottest “necklashirts” by 3.1 Phillip Lim. You know, those shirts with a built-in necklace? They are great for rocking out because the necklace won’t fly up and hit you in the face. Hers is on sale at VanJean right this second. Just saying.)
The Shop Tart’s brother, who was wearing a button-down shirt under a gray v-neck sweater with a pretty awesome pair of jeans with subtle, minimalist stud detailing on the back pockets, ordered oysters to go with his salad. It’s kind of hard to take a pretty picture of oysters, but you can see these are healthy-looking.
Soon another bottle of wine appeared. (Huh. Not sure who ordered that. What?) Throughout their meal, the ladies and gentleman had recognized certain dishes coming out of the kitchen by their wonderful smell. Not sure how Rosso does that, but the Shop Tart found herself craving both calamari and fries by the so-called end of her meal. Dessert had not been ordered, so they went for the fries. Oh. My. Word. They were incredible. The perfectly fried potatoes were served with an olive and something aioli. That’s right, “olive and something.” They were on the second bottle of wine and the Shop Tart cannot be expected to remember these things.
They finally left the restaurant singing this wildly inappropriate holiday classic. The driver, for the record, was not singing. And was not the Shop Tart.
So, New Year’s Eve is tomorrow night, right? There are loads of things happening and reservations are recommended for most of them, so please check the calendar to see where you might like to be. Also, please be safe and call Valet US at 528-6559 if you need a ride home. (They’ll get you home safe. In your very own car, so you avoid the painful and embarrassing jog of shame the next morning to retrieve it.)
Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!
P.S. If you are planning on hitting the sales today, please call ahead and make sure your destination is open. Some places are closed and some have limited hours.
* Love, love, love this job. Also love bubbly, great shoes, sparkly things…and long walks on the beach. As long as there are cocktails at the end.
P.S. The Shop Tart received a press release recently about Motor’s 20th anniversary and how they plan to celebrate. “On Sunday, January 24, [Ed. Note: The Shop Tart's birthday! SQUEEEE!] Chef Peters welcomes another local favorite chef, Alex Suaudom of Baan Sawan Thai restaurant in Columbia, for a special dinner, ‘Motor Through the Eyes of Baan Sawan.’ Both chefs will collaborate to craft a six course, prix-fixe menu featuring the best dishes of Motor with a Thai influence. Each course will be paired with a wine chosen to highlight the flavors and ingredients in the dish. A special hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Cost is $100 per person, excluding tax and gratuity, and reservations are required. To make a reservation, call 803-256-6687.” So…see y’all there?

Girl, hold my hair.
Filed Under Uncategorized | 3 Comments
So, it’s that time of year. All this closeness is getting to you and you need to vent. You want to barf it all up and you need a friend who will hold your hair back while you do - not offer you Pepto, not chastise you for drinking too much in the first place - just hold your hair, stroke your forehead and offer soothing words or indignant agreement. Yesterday afternoon, the Shop Tart was making cabbage soup…screeerrrch*…
Can we talk about cabbage soup for a second? It was early in the morning and the Shop Tart wanted some. She had a cabbage from the All-Local Farmers’ Market and had been meaning to make the soup for days, but she wanted some right that second. She chopped some cabbage, put it in a bowl and poured her favorite boxed stock over it. (Shop Tart Tip: If you are very industrious, make your own stock. It’s easy and a great way to use up a chicken or turkey carcass and/or vegetables that are less than fresh. The Shop Tart will happily tell you how so you can make a ton and freeze it in small containers. If you are less industrious - like the Shop Tart - always have a box on hand. Low sodium and organic, natch.) She likes this one by Pacific Natural Foods, available at Rosewood Market.
She microwaved the stock and cabbage, because she was too impatient to do it on the stove. The soup was okay, but a bit bland, like something in the hospital. She added salt and pepper. Eh. Tout d’un coup, she remembered the small container of sausage gravy from Spotted Salamander. Although it was only about a third of a cup and she was out of biscuits, she hadn’t been able to bear throwing it in the garbage. A tablespoon of the gravy added to the soup transformed it. Heaven. Anyhow, that afternoon, she was using the rest of the gravy to make a larger pot of stew for dinner when she got a text from a dear friend who also happens to have three sons and a pretty cool husband.
The friend wanted to meet at Cock and Bull. How could the Shop Tart say no? Mr. Shop Tart wasn’t home yet, so she would have to go it alone. She grabbed a quick post-workout shower and gave silent thanks for Klorane dry shampoo.
The shrimp burger was calling her name. After her quick shower, she put the smallest child in his stroller and walked to the restaurant with her boys. (Ah, the joys of living in Shandon.) The burger - as always - was perfect. In fact, it was even better than usual because it seemed to be just a little bit smaller. In the past, it has been big enough that the Shop Tart felt obligated to take half of it home (or eat it all and roll home). The company was divine and the Shop Tart was happy to have her friend hold back her hair while she vented. The best friends for that sort of thing, by the way, are the ones who won’t spew more negativity. The point of venting should not be to make everyone hate another person - that is so middle school - but to make the subject easier to tolerate. After all, none of our friends are perfect, n’est-ce pas? Do we really want to dismiss every friend who has ever irritated us? Unless you are on serious meds, someone you love has irritated you, probably more than once. And the Shop Tart is sure she has been the subject of a loving vent or two. (As have you, dear, as have you.) Vent on, lady, just don’t let it get in your hair. Dry shampoo can’t fix that. Has this metaphor gone on too long? Probably.
So, the friend with whom she had dinner shared a secret. Those of you who have been to Smoke recently may have enjoyed the bread pudding served at their recent dinner with Chef Chris Hastings of Hot and Hot Fish Club fame. This is the recipe, a riff on Chris and Idie Hastings’ raspberry and white chocolate bread pudding from their book.
Best Bread Pudding The Shop Tart Has Ever Had
- Combine 2 cups cream and 1/2 cup sugar over medium heat with a teaspoon of vanilla, bring to simmer and remove from heat to cool.
- Mix 3 beaten eggs into the cooled cream and sugar mix and let it cool completely.
- Add about half a baguette (16 ounces), pulled or cut into half-inch pieces, one and a half cups dried cranberries and four ounces chopped white chocolate to cooled cream mixture and stir together. Let stand for about 30 minutes.
- Pour the mixture into an 8×8 greased baking dish and top it with another half cup dried cranberries.
- Cover the pan with aluminum foil and set it inside larger dish filled halfway up with water.
- Cook at 350° for 35 minutes.
- Remove foil, raise the heat a little and cook the pudding for another 25 minutes to brown the top.
- Serve it with ice cream and the white chocolate sauce from the Hot and Hot Fish Club Cookbook
.
Maybe, if you like, you could add a little of this lemon jam from the Gourmet Shop to the sauce. Because the Shop Tart likes lemon.
Happy Cooking and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!
P.S. There are even more sales and New Year’s Eve events on the calendar. So go look. Please contact individual stores about their hours. If a sale lasts more than a week, the sale may be listed on a Sunday when the store is closed. Also, many places have special holiday hours.
* That was the sound of a needle scratching a record. It was meant to indicate a sudden pause in the dialogue. Did it work? Anyhow.

A weekend of food and fun…
Filed Under Great deal, Uncategorized | 8 Comments
Christmas Eve, as always, la famille enjoyed bounty from Yummy Yummy II while celebrating Mr. Shop Tart’s birthday. His wife got him these cuff links by Steampunk on Etsy, made from vintage watch works. Cool, right?
After his party, they stayed up really late waiting for Santa. Christmas morning, the Shop Tart ’bout fell out because she had forgotten to load the percolator with Cashua coffee the night before. Children like to wake up at 4 on Christmas morning. Chez Shop Tart, they are not allowed to come downstairs until 6:30, which is still obscenely early, but their heads might explode if they have to wait longer and she is no child abuser. She could either give the children sleeping aids (illegal, unhealthy and creepy) or drink copious amounts of delicious coffee while trying to block out their squeals of delight (has its drawbacks, but legal and involves delicious coffee). Years ago, the Shop Tart’s mother gave her this percolator, which she pulls out once or twice a year. It is the bomb. Usually, she loads it the night before and plugs it in to get it going before the children wake up. This year, they had to stay upstairs for a few more minutes while she and Mr. Shop Tart fumbled around the kitchen, readying their fix.
They had a small breakfast in anticipation of the large brunch they would enjoy later at the Shop Tart’s mother’s house. Last week, Mr. Shop Tart purchased biscuits and sausage gravy from Spotted Salamander at the All-Local Farmers’ Market for Christmas morning. They were frozen and took about five minutes to prepare. And were un-freaking-believably good. Not a pretty picture, but yum, yum, yum.
Present opening ensued and the children were adorable. The Shop Tart thought she loved Christmas before - with children, it’s even better. They were really excited about the birdhouse Mr. Shop Tart got them from the All-Local Farmers’ market. Yes, it was still dark outside.
To prove they are normal children, they were also very excited about their electronic gifts. (Each of the two older boys got a different one and the Shop Tart isn’t saying what they were, because they weren’t purchased locally and far be it from her to set any kind of precedent about what children should be allowed to have at what age.) The Shop Tart squealed with glee when she opened a gift from her friend Tracie, who is one of the best gift-givers in the world. Really. Tracie found this casserole dish and lid at the Old Mill Antique Mall. For those of you who are oddly, even freakishly, obsessed familiar with these things, the dish is Pyrex, in the Friendship pattern. That pattern is slightly harder to find than the others and the Shop Tart LOVES it.
After the presents were opened and the sun had risen officially, la famille went to the Shop Tart’s parents’ house for brunch. As you may remember, the Shop Tart’s mother is slightly under the weather, so they had decided to let someone else do the cooking. Dishes from Happy Cafe, the Biscuit House and Gourmet Shop were divine. There is no better smoked salmon in all of Columbia than that found at the Gourmet Shop.
They also had baked apples and cranberries from Happy Cafe. They were not served with the basil jelly off to the side, but it made a decent photo, n’est-ce pas? The basil jelly from this year’s Trinity Cathedral Bazaar was served with cream cheese and crackers as an appetizer.
This tray of biscuits was about to go into the oven. The sweet potato biscuits were a gift from the lovely Sidney Heyward, who had them custom-made at the Biscuit House from her mother’s recipe oops using her mother’s smaller biscuit cutter so the biscuits wouldn’t be too large. Which is actually kind of intriguing. The cinnamon biscuits are from Happy Cafe. Both were obscenely delicious.
Miss Christine Sellers of Columbia, now of Washington D.C., provided this plate of beer and molasses bread. Y’all. It was so good. The Shop Tart’s mama was going nuts over it. (Recipe, Christine? Please?) Christine also provided a ride from Washington for one of the Shop Tart’s sisters.
The Shop Tart’s plate, pre-biscuits, looked like this. The Happy Cafe sausage and cheese grits to the left of the bagel were so, so good. You don’t even know. But the Shop Tart does, because she ate about half a pan of them. Her middle-school son ate the other half.
This was on the adult table (edited to make it look kind of old-school, because the Shop Tart is a child of the seventies and eighties and Christmas is for children).
And the children’s table…
Speaking of old-school, some grown-ups still get stockings, like the Shop Tart’s sister and brother. Mom needle-pointed stockings for each of her children.
After dessert at her aunt and uncle’s house and an afternoon movie, la famille returned to Mimi’s house for a light dinner - salad and more sausage cheese grits. Back at home, the Shop Tart was in bed by 9 pm, fast asleep.
So…the sales are crazy. Many stores are about to take inventory and they are trying to clear out as much merchandise as possible so they won’t have to count it. What does this mean for you? Deals, deals, deals! There are plenty of sales on the calendar, but if you don’t see your favorite boutique there, rest assured they are probably having one. The Shop Tart created this quiz to help you make decisions about sale merchandise.
Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!

It’s still a holiday!
Filed Under Uncategorized | 6 Comments
The Shop Tart thinks Christmas should be on Friday every year because it makes for a nice, festive weekend. Today, don’t just sit around in your pajamas. The All-Local Farmers’ Market is open until noon, so get on down there and pick up something awesome for dinner. Even if you don’t want to shop, enjoy Gervais and Vine’s quiche and grits made from all local ingredients at the market. Yum, yum, yum. Although the Shop Tart is tempted to stay in her pajamas and eat leftover food from Yummy Yummy II, she plans to head out soon. (Every Christmas Eve, which happens to be Mr. Shop Tart’s birthday, they host a feast with takeout from Yummy Yummy II, quite possibly the best Chinese takeout in town. In the photo below, you can also see the Shop Tart’s china pattern, Wedgewood Amherst. She doesn’t really like it. She doesn’t hate it, but it bores her a little. She’s been contemplating selling it and choosing something new. Most of her relatives gave her silver, not china. One of her grandmother’s gave her a bowl, but it broke years ago. Would it be OK to let the pattern go? Discuss.)
Do go out and enjoy the day. After all, the weather is a little better than it was yesterday. The Shop Tart’s parents’ yard was half underwater. (Ten points to the first person to spot the living creature in the photo below.)
Most stores are open and the hard-core sales have begun. Years ago, the Shop Tart and her roommate enjoyed going to Atlanta just after Christmas to hit the sales and a bar or three. One memorable New Year’s Eve (well, memorable for them), they went there, met up with a couple of guys they knew from Columbia (but not very well) and ended up at a most excellent party. One of the hosts was wearing a coat and tie. (Unusual in those days. Unusually HOT.) He was quizzing guests like Alex Trebek. Somehow, it was incredibly sexy. Funny how the mind works. The Shop Tart is pretty sure she would still get hot and bothered over a scruffily good-looking guy in a coat and tie imitating Alex Trebek, especially if he got the questions right. *swoon* That same year, she scored an incredible deal on a ribbed cashmere turtleneck sweater at J. Crew. She still has the sweater, but cannot remember Jeopardy Boy’s name. It’s quite possible she and her roommate giggled in the corner and were never formally introduced. Anyhow…
Stores are open, so check the sales. The Shop Tart is going to spend the next hour or so updating the calendar. If you don’t see a sale listed at your favorite shop, never fear. If they’re open, they’re having a sale. The days after Christmas are the best time to get the most bang for your gift certificate bucks. So go on! Let this be your shopping and partying guardian angel. She has stood on top of the tree of les parents Shop Tart for as long as she can remember. And she looks like Courtney Love, dressed up as an angel.
So, if you score any great deals today, please share in the comments section. The Shop Tart wants to know!
Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!
