The Shop Tart and her husband don’t mean to go to La Fourchette every time they are in Charleston, but they do. Why? Because they love it. Going to La Fourchette is like taking a trip to France for a few hours. It’s the little bistro you would discover by accident, but you never do, because you’re in France and you’re lost. In Charleston, you can find it right there on King Street.

After her first night under the tents at Charleston Fashion Week, the Shop Tart wanted to relax. She decided to forgo the “Official After-Party” at Fish and slip into La Fourchette instead, where she sat at the bar, perusing the fashion week magazine for previews of the rest of the week.

Behind the bar at La Fourchette

Mais oui, she started with a glass of bubbly. Although there was free bubbly under the tents where she was seated*, she couldn’t over-indulge, because bubbly and paying attention don’t mix for her. And, while she normally shuns unnecessary carbs, this bread is worth it. Absolument.

Pain et VIn at La Fourchette

She quickly decided on tartare de boeuf and salade verte (salade après, bien sûr.) The tartare arrived right when she was ready, with the eggshell containing the yolk on top of the beef, as it should be, so she could pour it over the plate. Heaven!

Tartare de Boeuf, La Fourchette

As she ate, she enjoyed chatting with chef and proprietor Perig Goulet, who is always charming in addition to being a source of excellent information about food. And the Shop Tart does love food, although they share a dislike for the word “foodie,” much to her delight.

Le Chef, La Fourchette

She was also delighted to learn he remembered her fondly (or pretended to, very convincingly) from her last visit, in spite of the fact that she had one too many and insisted on going into the kitchen to see his famous crêpe machine (which was really cool, by the way!) She explained how she had hated beets until she tried the roasted beet crêpes at La Fourchette that evening. He began to extoll the virtues of the beet and leek salad and, as her mouth began to water, she knew she had to change her salade verte order.

L'addition, La Fourchette

The salad was divine, the perfect ratio of beets to leeks to vinaigrette**. The vinaigrette is spectacular and is made from only three things, according to Perig: white wine vineger, extra-virgin olive oil and mustard from Rouen, where the Shop Tart’s mother-in-law just happens to have originated. Her belle-mère is in France right now and the Shop Tart hopes to reach her by e-mail and see about obtaining some of this divine mustard. Of course, it’s quite likely there’s more to the vinaigrette than he says; French people are like that, you know. He once offered a large quantity of the vinaigrette as a wedding gift to a patron who wanted it for her reception and found her caterer unable to oblige.

Beet and leek salad, La Fourchette

At some point, her glass had been re-filled and she began to feel at home, a much nicer home than her own with better food. When Perig asked if she had a sweet tooth, she demurred, but was talked into just one bite. He prepared this delicious treat right on the bar - crispy puff pastry filled with something creamy and cold and covered with rich, dark chocolate sauce. Does she need to tell you how good it was?

Petit dessert, La Fourchette

We love the bistro late at night, when chefs from neighboring restaurants stop in for a bite and a glass. Chef David Pell of Coast was at the bar that night and several other friends of Perig’s stopped by to say hello.

Chef David Pell from Coast at La Fourchette

After turning down another glass of bubbly, because she wasn’t willing to walk home in her heels, the Shop Tart left, pleasantly warm and full. Delightful!

La Porte, La Fourchette

She is surprised more people haven’t tried this gem, which is always packed during dinner hours. During this recession, a night out at a restaurant seems more practical than a tour of France, n’est-ce pas?

Home again, home again. And the shows were fabulous! Although she missed the first two days, the Shop Tart had a blast on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. She ate her way through Charleston and did just enough shopping to feel content. Hampden Clothing’s show on Thursday was so great, the Shop Tart had to go there the very next day to snap up a Rag and Bone skirt she spotted on the runway. Owner Stacy Smallwood was so sweet - she let the very rushed Shop Tart try on the skirt in the stock room as lines for the dressing rooms were three-deep. A trip to Bits of Lace yielded the Shop Tart’s first ever La Perla bra and the knowledge that they have things in the stockroom that aren’t on the floor, so you should make sure to work with one of their knowledgeable and patient salespeople while you’re there to find the brassiere that will change your life. The Shop Tart headed straight to Biton to use the gift card they included in her media freebies bag (love this job) and discovered she didn’t want skinny white jeans after all. She wanted bright, neon yellow skinny jeans. Who knew? At Stella Nova, she was thrilled to find the real Anthelios sunscreen, straight from Europe (as opposed to the American version found at drugstores). As she remembered, it goes beautifully under makeup and protects from the sun like no other. She also found some lovely pink lipsticks from Nars (Roman Holiday, also available at Pout here in town, get the velvet matte pencil, too!) and The Balm (Classified - a nifty, neutral color, almost like Silly Putty). Last, but not least, she scored her first bikini of the season - by Trina Turk - using another freebie, a discount coupon for Everything But Water.

And the food, oh mercy, the food. While in Charleston, the Shop Tart loves to head to Ted’s Butcher Block for little treats to eat in, like pâté from Cafe Lana, roasted vegetables to add to salad and bubbly to wash it all down. Ted’s also has wine and…wait for it…bacon tastings. Yum. Thursday night, she ate alone at the bar at one of her favorite spots in all of Charleston, La Fourchette. And she wasn’t alone for long, because she was entertained (and treated to a glass of bubbly and a little dessert) by chef and proprietor Perig Goulet. La Fourchette may just merit an entire post later this week. Friday night, she joined the VanJean crowd at Basil for delicious Thai food. Susan, Christina and Mr. Susan were there. Yet another VanJean Susan joined them later, when they were headed to some bar on Sullivan’s Island. After midnight. Yes, the Shop Tart is too old for that kind of behavior, but it was fun and she got home safely, so who cares? Saturday afternoon, after sleeping in (and jogging to retrieve her car from the parking garage where she wisely left it the night before. ahem.), she joined her cousin at King Street Grille, where you can invent your own salad, choosing from about a billion ingredients. After the final shows that evening and a short stop at the Gala to hear Cynthia Rowley announce the winner of the Emerging Designer competition (Marysia!), the Columbia crew (with the addition of the charming Shani and Aaron Gilchrist) headed to Rue de Jean, where they waited semi-patiently for a table for about an hour. The french fries hit the spot. For future reference, the Shop Tart will order fries, sushi or mussels there. And bubbly, of course! At Rue de Jean, they ran into divine jewelry designer Jane Pope Cooper, who will be moving to New York soon, where her husband will be attending graduate school. Jane’s designs were featured in a lot of shows, including finalists’ Marysia and Troubador. The Shop Tart hopes she has time for one more trunk show at VanJean before they go. Sunday morning, she and her husband went to an old favorite for brunch, the Hominy Grill. They enjoyed absolutely perfect weather on the patio before one more quick jaunt down King Street. After a frozen yogurt at Fresh Berry and a quick peek at Caviar and Bananas (next trip, they’ll eat there, for sure), they ran into an old friend on the street and chatted until it was time to rush back and relieve the grandparents. Whew!

There are too many pictures to show individually (or to spend time editing!) so please enjoy these slide shows…

Thursday, non-slideshow version.

Friday, non-slideshow version.

Saturday, non-slideshow version.

Sunday, non-slideshow version.

The Shop Tart really enjoyed The Digitel’s coverage of fashion week, particularly their Twitters (one of which informed her that, yes, she was sitting beside a travel writer from Italian Vogue. Who was wearing what appeared to be denim cowboy boots. And somehow managing to rock them.) Anyhow, check out the Digitel for all kinds of Charleston insider news; maybe, just maybe, they can help us be a little cooler next time we visit… They were also super friendly. Hip and friendly is a fab combination, n’est-ce pas?

Here’s a last look - three short, badly filmed videos. These are the final walks for the three emerging designer finalists. In the last one, winner Marysia’s, the Shop Tart seems to drop her camera. Thanks to her diligent use of the wrist strap, she narrowly escaped such a travesty. Thanks to the woman next to her, who was a little too into the free bubbly, she was jostled and her short clip interrupted. This woman, for some unknown reason, was wearing a leather jacket, in spite of the rain and heat. A leather jacket that was flung at the Shop Tart like a wet cow when drunk lady stumbled up to applaud. She was also carrying an enormous, suitcase-sized matching bag, in spite of the close seating. She also spilled one of her myriad free bubblies on the ground and was forced to put her enormous bag at the Shop Tart’s feet, where the Shop Tart was tempted to - but to her credit did not - stomp on it. Grrrr. Some people. Ahem. Anyhow…

Alena Fede show, final walk.

Lindsey Carter’s Troubador, final walk.

Maria Dobrzanska Reeves’ Marysia, final walk (dramatic jostling included.)

Although she had a blast, the Shop Tart is happy to be back home in Columbia, where the weather is good and the shopping rocks. She was proud to represent Columbia at Fashion Week and tickled pick when people stopped to ask her what she was wearing. The bright blue Loeffler top (VanJean) got props worn with her new Rag and Bone skirt from Hampden and obscenely high Louboutins from Coplon’s. So did the Phillip Lim gold wrap skirt, teal Tracy Reese cropped blazer and Loeffler harem pants (all VanJean.) Lots of people gushed over these Arturo Chiang shoes from Kicks. The Shop Tart has them in tan (and wears them way too often for her own good). She would like to give a shout out to Jackie and the ladies at Kicks for managing to find shoes that look and feel way more expensive than they are!

Arturo Chiang at Kicks

The girls in Mary Norton loved them and wrote down the information for Kicks, even though that particular pair is gone. Speaking of Mary Norton, the Shop Tart loved visiting the store and trying on a few pairs, including the ones below, which were surprisingly comfortable and stayed on well enough for dancing.

Mary Norton. Love!

If you’re buying, she’ll take these, too. And the bag. Mwah!

Mary Norton.

Back in the day, the Shop Tart rarely if ever missed a happy hour at Goatfeathers. She isn’t proud of this but, as she experienced her own personal recession common among twenty-one year olds, she often timed her drink orders to fall only during Happy Hour, when prices were lower. Ahhh…those were the days. Last night, like the grown-up she almost is, she met two of the ladies from WACH Fox 57 at Goatfeathers for work-related drinks. Yup, work-related. Drinks. Being a grown-up is excellent. The Shop Tart is now a correspondent for WACH’s new website, The Columbia Cool. She is not quite sure what this entails, but believes it will be plenty of fun. She can tell it will be fun, because those tv ladies have fab bags, always a good sign, n’est-ce pas? Kacey Liles Mattox, marketing executive, was rocking this red one from Handpicked. Love!

Kacey's Bag

Katie Toole recently scored this fab, fab Kooba bag for a fab, fab price. As she herself would say, “Yes, please!” This bright yellow, in the Shop Tart’s opinion, can be worn year-round.

Katie's Kooba bag.

The desserts at Goatfeathers still look delicious…

Goatfeathers Desserts

Although they didn’t indulge in dessert, dinner was yummy. Kacey swears by Goatfeathers’ veggie burger, the Shop Tart loved her roasted portabella sandwich and Katie’s lasagna looked divine. The Zardetto prosecco was just what the Shop Tart needed.

Perfect any time of day.

And let’s not forget James behind the bar, entertaining the ladies.

Goatefeathers bar.

Outside, the Shop Tart spotted local celebrities Nick of The Half and Half, and Ashley, belly dancer and model for Runaway Runway.

Nick and Ashley, local celebrities

Speaking of Runaway Runway, guess who gets to be one of the judges this year? SQUEEEEE! The Shop Tart, which is worth a second SQUEEEEE! So far, she is being joined by Debbie McDaniel, owner of both Revente and Sid & Nancy, and Bruce Greenberg, owner of Coplon’s. Can you hear the Shop Tart chanting, “I’m not wooooorthy…I’m not woooooorthy…” Do come to the show. It will be a blast! And here is Ashley, looking hot.

Runaway Runway

And today, ladies and gentlemen, the Shop Tart is headed to Charleston for the end of Fashion Week. Can we hear another SQUEEEEEE?

Tomorrow morning, the Shop Tart is headed to Charleston for Fashion Week and she can’t wait. There are a few videos of the week so far on Charleston Fashion Week’s site already - looks like a fab time! The forecast calls for rain in Charleston this weekend, but who believes that? Not the Shop Tart! Even so, she’ll take her fab Jeffrey Campbell rain boots from Kicks (both pairs, navy and black.) In case it doesn’t rain, she’ll take about six other pairs of shoes, maybe even some new ones for spring.

New shoes for spring? As always, Kicks has plenty of new kicks, with more arriving every day. Metallics are big, brights are bigger and we love them both, but the Shop Tart was thrilled to see plenty of shoes in her favorite color. Most of these are more or less the same color as her skin, so wearing them makes her look taller, thinner and longer-legged. Heck, yeah!

Shop Tart's favorite shoe color at Kicks

We’ve seen a few It Girls around town rocking these Jill Stuart pumps already, including at least one of VanJean’s most fabulously-dressed buyers…

The It Girl shoes for spring at Kicks

These are so lovely, we get chills.

Love! At Kicks.

But on to the brights. And there are plenty, including new shoes by Ann Roth, a designer from nearby Atlanta, Georgia. These spring green patent leather ones would look fab with everything from white jeans to a pencil skirt and the flats are too cute! The patent ones also come in hot pink.

Ann Roth at Kicks

The Shop Tart can’t decide if she loves these more in blue or brown. Maybe she needs both. And the bags pictured with them, please!

Ann Roth at Kicks Ann Roth at Kicks

Speaking of bags, Kicks has great ones for spring, like this one, which the Shop Tart thinks would quickly turn into your go-to bag and, at $248, it won’t break the bank (or go out of style any time soon - it’s a classic!)

Fab bag for spring from Kicks

Need color? Need a gift for the Shop Tart? This works!

Love! At Kicks.

This purple bag would be surprisingly versatile. The nice thing about brights is that they go with other brights, so you can go nuts. This bag would look great with pink, green, blue, orange, gold, silver, black…any color, really.

Sandals at Kicks

Orange, a new neutral, is here to stay. Think of it as a really bright brown.

Color anyone? At Kicks.

And, for all you straight-off-the-runway girls, Kicks has these…

…and these. Fierce, n’est-ce pas?

So fab. Spring 2009 at Kicks.

And these were being pulled out of a box while the Shop Tart was in the shop. The two on the ends would be practical and the three in the middle will be sold-out soon thanks to their total awesomeness, so go get yours!

These just in at Kicks.

as for those fab shoes by Ann Roth, she visited Kicks recently and left her Fall 2009 samples so you, dear shoe lover and would-be buyer, can help choose what will be in the shop for fall. The samples are in the Lexington shop until today and will be downtown for the rest of the week. Don’t miss your chance for a sneak peek! Saky!

Filed Under Uncategorized | 1 Comment

The Shop Tart adores sushi, don’t you? She has several favorites in town, including Saky, where she’s been going, well, ever since she knew sushi existed. It’s not easy to find if you don’t know where you’re going. Saky is definitely one of those places you might pass by if you didn’t know what deliciousness awaited inside. The restaurant is located just outside the gates of Fort Jackson, across the street from the Kings Grant entrance. Back in the day, there was little bar beside the restaurant. There was a window in the wall between Saky and the bar, through which drinks were passed, as Saky didn’t have their own bar. In recent years, the restaurant has expanded and taken over the whole space. Depending on what the sign reads at the moment, you will dine at Sake, Saki or, currently, Saky. Wherever you are, you’ll enjoy a great dinner.

Decor at Saky

The Shop Tart went to Saky the other night with about fifteen friends for one of their forty-fourth birthdays. The birthday girl was the object of some envy as she had been carded the week before, on her actual forty-fourth birthday, for a glass of wine in a restaurant with a bunch of her colleagues, all math professors. She, too, is a math professor, and somehow manages to look younger than many of her students. Maybe it’s the sushi. Anyhow…there are some appetizers you shouldn’t miss. Edamame (also known as soybeans) are the Japanese equivalent of our boiled peanuts and great for munching so you don’t starve while your friends decide what to order.

Edamame at Saky

If you are really hungry because, say, you worked out in the afternoon, usually eat at 5 pm and have friends who like to show up at least twenty minutes late for dinner and peruse the menu at leisure, you might choose the more substantial sashimi appetizer. If you can wait, you might even choose it for dinner, along with some yummy sides.

Sashimi appetizer at Saky

You may want to remain patient, because these little appetizers soon arrive for free or as an accompaniment to the meals that have been ordered. The Shop Tart’s favorite, a tiny dish of marinated eggplant and daikon and noodle salad, never fails to please.

Little snack at Saky

Don’t forget the kimchee…

Kimchee at Saky

Kimchee calls for a cooling beverage to wash down the spicy taste, n’est-ce pas? Enjoy a classic Sapporo.

Sapporo Light at Sake

Not a beer drinker herself, the Shop Tart was really pleased with the Sauvignon Blanc she had the other night (Trinchero, maybe? Not sure, as there were three glasses involved.) Miso soup also cuts the spice with its light, slightly sweet taste.

Miso soup at Saky

For dinner, you have plenty of options. All fifteen of the ladies present the other night were in a sushi/sashimi kind of mood, but if that’s not your thing, never fear. Saky serves a full range of delectable Japanese dishes. The waitress made sure to inform the table that the tuna was particularly fresh that evening and it didn’t disappoint. Here we have the large Sashimi Teishoku, which the Shop Tart and the birthday girl shared. As far as the Shop Tart can tell, teishoku = dinner in Japanese.

Sashimi dinner at Saky

They also shared the Shop Tart’s absolute favorite treat at Saky: The Birthday Roll. The Birthday Roll has it all - crunchiness, mild sweetness, a spicy kick, chewiness, creaminess and visual fabulousness. Whatever else you order at Saky, you must order this. No arguments!

In the mood for a little bit of everything? Try the bento box, big enough to share with a friend. Or not!

Birthdays are fabulous at Saky, from the Red Bean Ice Cream…

…to the commemorative Polaroid, which will go on the wall with all the others. Do you recognize someone in this photo from several years ago?

Not too long ago

The Shop Tart and her friends sat at a large table in the back room. With a smaller group, we recommend these lovely booths.

Inside Saky

Wherever you sit, whatever you eat, the Shop Tart knows you’ll enjoy. Just don’t forget the Birthday Roll. And the yummy little appetizer dish. And don’t forget to call the Shop Tart, who wants to go back already!
