Best wedding present ever.
Filed Under art, cocktails and wine, eat and drink, home, shop, snack, south carolina designer
The Shop Tart had a small wedding, with lovely gifts from those nearest and dearest. Over the years, she has bought her own wedding presents, the kinds of things she might have had the sense to put on a registry if she hadn’t been a child when she got married. And now she has the great pleasure of buying wedding presents for other people. (Is she the only one who feels this way? She loves buying off the registry, because she knows she’s giving a gift the couple will love. And she loves going off registry when she feels inspired.)
Stephen Owen of Sixteen Acre Wood makes a heck of a wedding present. His wood creations have it all: beauty, versatility, history, and permanence. Who doesn’t need a slab of wood?
You can serve snacks on them!
They raise a block of cheese and stick of sausage to the level of art.
Stephen uses re-purposed wood, often from historical properties in South Carolina. He’s based in York County, but will travel for a good tree trunk, so do get in touch if you have one.
A couple of weeks ago at Soda City, Stephen was there and the Shop Tart fell in love with a heavy board, nearly three feet long. It weighs a ton. It made a great backdrop for a substantial afternoon snack.
This is the sort of thing that will take up permanent residence on the table or counter, because it’s heavy, large, and a lovely conversation piece.
Hold up. The Shop Tart has to digress for a moment. See those little crispy things in the foreground above? They are Jan’s Farmhouse Crisps from Gourmet Shop — brought to the house last evening with a gorgeous hunk of Cambazola by the Shop Tart’s lovely friend Sid. They have pistachios, flax seed, dried cranberries, and flax seed. They are sweet, healthy and delicious. Seriously, the perfect vehicle for almost any cheese. Love.
The Shop Tart’s Sixteen Acre Wood collection is growing. Next up? Definitely a bench or a bowl.
But before she buys more for herself, she’ll be picking up a few wedding presents. What do you think is the ideal size? The large one requires a little more commitment; at the very least, you need to know the happy couple’s kitchen. If the Shop Tart were buying one for you, what would you want? Large? Small? Legs? No legs? Do tell.

Small with legs! Though the large one sure does look nice too….
If you like Jan’s crackers you should try Lesley Stowe’s raincoat crisps! The fig version are my favorite. (p.s. – they sell them at fresh market & WF)

I vote small with legs! Throw in some of those crisps and I’d love you forever.
