The Shop Tart was so proud to live in the home of the fighting Gamecocks last night. She’s the first to admit our sport teams don’t always make her feel that way. The USC Fashion Board and Marquis Bias, though? They owned it at 701 Whaley! The Shop Tart’s little point-and-shoot was unable to capture much, as its efficacy depends on good lighting and she was facing the sun. There are quite a few (not hers!) posted on the Columbia Cool; you can see those here. She did shoot a few little video clips, though. But let’s back up for a moment, shall we?
The evening began at Garibaldi’s, because the Shop Tart was hungry and, frankly, a little bit scared there would be no alcohol at the show. Darn those pesky South Carolina laws. She met her dear friend Lisa at the bar, where they stayed for a quick meal. The salmon with asparagus and shittake mushrooms was incroyable. Nothing hits the spot like a glass of dry white wine and a big piece of perfectly-prepared fish. Lisa had a salad, which also looked fantastic, but the Shop Tart was too busy devouring her own meal to ask. Soon they were joined by another friend, Kana, and Kacey from WACH Fox 57, who planned to attend the show with the Shop Tart. They ate and ran, making it to 701 just in time to beg for a seat and see the shows.
The first show featured clothing by student designers Emily Smith, Brad Boultinghouse, Emma Mahon and Molly Stevens. Molly is actually a student from Clemson and the designer behind Ellen and Ollie, recently featured right here on this blog and available in town at M Boutique. This is the final walk with all the models and designers.
Music was provided by DJ Perry A, who set a tone that was sophisticated and fun at the same time. And we love Gallery 701. Thanks to Richard Burts*, the space is incredible and just what Columbia needs. We love how the warehouse feel makes everything seem edgier. We also love that the warehouse feel isn’t overdone; the decor, elevators and - most importantly - bathrooms are lovely and modern. The Shop Tart and Kacey caught up with student designer Emma Mahon after the show.
And the Shop Tart chased Brad Boultinghouse down the hall:
She wishes she had caught up with the other two student designers, because she loves meeting the artist behind the work. Speaking of artists, a second show featured clothing from local shops, including LaRoque. The Shop Tart caught AnnaBelle packing up after the show and enjoyed a brief chat with her and two of the models.
AnnaBelle’s clothing was featured in the second show, along with outfits from Brittons, M Boutique, Mary and Belladea. Can the Shop Tart get sniffly here for a moment and say how very happy it makes her to see local shops and a successful local designer supporting student work? *sniff*
She also enjoyed talking with Travis, a fashion photographer, after the show. She can’t wait to see his photos, because they are surely much better than hers!
By the way, hair and make-up for the shows was provided by the Paul Mitchell School. Do you know about this? You should! Conveniently located in the Vista, Paul Mitchell is the place to go for beauty bargains. The work is done by students and, if last night’s show is any indication, they do a great job. The Shop Tart might have to head to the school next time she doesn’t feel like setting her own hair…
The true star of the evening was Marquis Bias, a junior at USC and by all accounts the man most responsible for last night’s show. The Shop Tart was a slacker in college. Mr. Bias is apparently the opposite. Everyone raved over how much work he had put into the show and the Shop Tart loves to see passion turn into something great! She was thrilled to learn he will be at USC for another year and has plans to put up more shows before he finishes. The Shop Tart won’t miss a single one!
When the kids left to do homework or whatever it is college kids do at night these days, the Shop Tart and Kacey headed back to Garibaldi’s to rehash the fabulous evening. The Shop Tart asked Corey the bartender, who remembered them from earlier in the evening, about desserts. He listed them and, as much as the she loves Garibaldis’ almond bowl with ice cream or a slice of that crazy chocolate pie, she really wanted her favorite dessert - french fries. As it happened, the restaurant didn’t have any vinegar, so the Shop Tart asked for “whatever sauce the guys in the back think would go really good with french fries.” Tomato basil aioli, that’s what. Yum! Like the Shop Tart, Kacey has a penchant for creating her own menu item. Last night, she asked for fried green tomatoes, minus the fried oysters that usually accompany them and plus some goat cheese. So good. Even Corey thought so!
They enjoyed chatting with Stacey and Perry of Britton’s of Columbia who had also stopped by for a late dinner after the show. Also spotted at the show: Lord Maxwell, local style maven, Caroline Lord, local writer and editor, and Mary Kent Hearon, model, writer, holistic health counselor, fashionista, website owner and everything else! All in all, a great evening and we can’t wait for more. Kudos to everyone involved!
