The Shop Tart, after a gushing recommendation from a friend with beautiful skin, decided to pony up for Crème de la Mer  in the dead of winter when she gets less than pretty patches of dry skin on random spots of her face. The cost, while somewhat distressing, proved worth it when the dry spots disappeared and no unsightly bumps resulted.

Crème de la Mer

Hooray! The elusive Crème de la Mer, however, is not available in Columbia and the Shop Tart is all about instant gratification and supporting local business. The ladies at Pout suggested she try Fresh’s Crème Ancienne, available right there in the store.

Crème Ancienne by Fresh

For one week, she used Crème Ancienne on one side of her face and Crème de la Mer on the other. Guess what? It worked just as well, if not better. The skin on the Crème Ancienne side was smoother and more even-toned than the Crème de la Mer skin and all dryness disappeared on both sides. There are less ingredients in the product by Fresh and, to the Shop Tart’s unscientific mind, this proves they are more concentrated. She also believes, when it comes to skin, less is more. At a glance, the ingredients in Crème Ancienne are all-natural, whereas Crème de la Mer contains a few unpronounceable things. The Shop Tart is a convert - Crème Ancienne it is!

Although it’s always thrilling to discover a new product, it is less than thrilling when that product is très pricey. Both Crème Ancienne ($135 per ounce) and Crème de la Mer ($130 per ounce, plus shipping) will curtail your going out for a week or so. The Shop Tart had heard the rumors. Maybe you have, too. Nivea Creme , according to dubious sources, is identical to Crème de la Mer, for a fraction of the price (around $750 for 3 ounces.) For you, dear reader, the Shop Tart tried it.

Nivea Crème

Just by looking at the package, you can tell the product is not as classy - Nivea neglects to add the accent aigu in “crème,” which proves less attention to detail on the part of the creators, n’est-ce pas? She would have preferred they call it “Nivea Cream.” She also does not care for American shopping malls named “Such-and-Such Centre,” but that is neither here nor there. On to the experiment…she tried Nivea on one side of her face and Crème de la Mer on the other, as she had run out of her sample of Crème Ancienne. Even though she preferred the Crème Ancienne, she didn’t hate her old Crème de la Mer and she is certainly not one to waste $130 face cream. She applied the moisturizers before bedtime and initially, they appeared to hydrate equally. The Nivea cream was more greasy, so she would be less inclined to use it during the day under makeup, but she held out hope, thinking she could save money by using Nivea at night and Crème Ancienne for day. Au contraire. The next morning, the Nivea side of her face had dry patches, whereas the side treated with Crème de la Mer did not. Crème Ancienne also left her face dry patch-free.

In conclusion, she’ll use up the Nivea cream by slathering it on her elbows, knees and feet. Do you know that trick? Before you exercise, cake a rich moisturizer on your feet and pull on your socks and shoes (unscented Vanicream is also a great choice for this.) When you take them off, your feet will be baby soft*! As for your lovely face? She wholeheartedly endorses Crème Ancienne. Guess we should start watching for specials at Pout - yet another reason to switch to Crème Ancienne. Crème de la Mer never, ever gets discounted, not even by a penny. Melissa Blanchard, owner of Pout, is far more gracious and does offer specials, like the occasional 10% off a Pout purchase if you show a receipt from her other boutique, VanJean. The Shop Tart does love a discount!

Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!

* Speaking of baby soft feet, the Shop Tart and her sister-in-law so enjoyed their mani-pedis at Soak yesterday. The lotion and scrubs they use smell like really delicious cake and the hand and foot massages that are included in the mani-pedi are divine. Ahhhh…perfectly polished, soft feet and hands. Lovely! We love the decor at Soak, too - so modern and pretty! And the music playlist is perfect, upbeat and relaxing all at once. Why not book an appointment with a friend late in the day, enjoy a glass of wine while being pampered, then go next door to Rosso for a light dinner at the bar? Why not invite the Shop Tart?
