Look of the Week!
Filed Under Bags, Beauty, Clothes, Good Cause!, Great deal, Jewelry, Look of the Week, Men, Sale, Shoes, prize | Leave a Comment
The Look of the Week was spotted at the VanJean sale, where the Shop Tart “saved” $900. Practically all of the Fall and Winter merchandise is 30, 50 or 75 percent off. Fun! Like Kicks, VanJean is offering a holiday wish list service. Make your list and they’ll contact the gift giver of your choice and offer free delivery and gift wrapping. The Shop Tart thinks this should be her gift to Mr. Shop Tart. Isn’t she sweet?
Susan Menge, a fashion merchandising major at USC, has been working at VanJean since high school. She recently interned at Globe Showroom in New York. Globe represents several designers found at VanJean, including Elijah, Manoush, Camilla Marc, James Coviello and (new!) Shop Tart favorite Falls. Her top is vintage Tibi, if you consider last year vintage. Her jeans are wide leg by Tory Burch. The coat, which isn’t Susan’s (yet?), is Phillip Lim. It could be yours, though! Originally $718, it’s on sale for $359. The Shop Tart thinks gold brocade is a great take on a classic trench.
Her gloves, which are too fabulous not to have their own closeup, are also Phillip Lim and marked down 30%. Maybe Mr. Shop Tart will get them for his wife for Christmas. If only he read her blog… They also come in a short version, in black.
VanJean and Pout are closed today, but will open on Friday. The Shop Tart thinks you should get in there and take advantage of the amazing sale. Mwah!
In other news…

- Simply Savory’s wine tasting is happening as usual on Friday, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Sounds like the perfect way to relax after shopping your tail off all day.

- Today is the last day to take advantage of the following sales:Kicks (both locations), Lola and Doodlebugs are offering 30% off to anyone who brings at least two non-perishable food items for Harvest Hope, Charlie Mack is offering 30% off one item, Max and Prissy is offering 25% off everything. Win a prize!
Filed Under Babies and Children, Bags, Clothes, Good Cause!, Great deal, Jewelry, prize | 2 Comments
Occasionally, the Shop Tart gets nice notes from people or business owners after they read about themselves here. She finds this very charming and, each time it happens, wishes she herself were better about writing notes. Maybe some fab new stationary from Jot or Burlap would help…
Sometimes, public relations people contact the Shop Tart. This is also exciting. Just last week, it was particularly exciting, because they wanted to send her something free for you, dear reader. The Shop Tart loves prizes, although she rarely wins them. When she was 7 years old, she and her mother were shopping at Tapp’s in Trenholm Plaza (remember that one?) where the Shop Tart made her mother register for a drawing. Her mother*, who didn’t even want to bother, won a prize! Twenty years later, she gave the prize to the Shop Tart.
This excellent book contains recipes for both dinner and supper, two distinctly different meals (Who knew?) Also, this book started the Shop Tart’s lifelong obsession with ugly pictures of food. The Shop Tart herself once won a french coffee press at Mary and Martha’s. Thrilling!
You, too, deserve the excitement of winning a prize and the good people at Invisibelt want to help. M Boutique carries them if you want to see what they’re all about. Possibly the most useful fashion tool since Stylin’ Tape (available at Tullulah), the Invisibelt comes in clear or black. Use it to cinch up that blousy dress or top from last year that’s begging for a waist. And Invisibelt seamlessly covers the button at the top of your jeans that pokes out, makes you look kind of pregnant and ruins the line of your sweater. You want one! And you can have one for free! Just send the Shop Tart a Thanksgiving food picture - your plate, a turkey, the buffet, a particularly hideous casserole. There won’t be any extra points for odd props like a pot of African Violets or a mushroom-shaped candle, but they will make the Shop Tart very happy. She’ll make a list of all the pictures she receives by Wednesday, December 3rd, put them in a hat and randomly choose a winner. Good luck!

In other news…
- Sales, sales, sales, y’all! The Shop Tart saved $900 at VanJean yesterday. Wheee! See yesterday’s post for a rundown of the sales this week.
- Revente just received four Chanel handbags, real ones. Go get ‘em!
- The Devine Street Merchants want you to make a donation to Epworth Children’s Home. Visit any participating merchant, make your donation and you’ll be entered to win a fabulous prize! Even if you don’t win, you’ll get a tax deduction for the donation - and we can all use that, n’est-ce pas?
Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!
* Who, in her defense, probably had two toddlers with her, in addition to the Shop Tart and possibly a bun in the oven. As you can imagine, the Shop Tart was not the easiest child to take shopping. She could never quite find the outfits she pictured in her head, which is not to say Tapp’s wasn’t a nice store. It was, but they didn’t carry couture for 7 year olds back then. By the way, did you know Marysia has a children’s line (click on “collections” and “bumby” to view)? The Shop Tart’s seven-year-old self would have loved it! And have you seen Phillip Lim’s line for children? Ahhhh…

It’s almost Thanksgiving, y’all! The Shop Tart loves this week, a time when you never know who will be in town visiting. She thinks you should go out every single night, just to see who you might run into. If you have holiday visitors who want to party, they won’t be disappointed - there’s so much to do! There are two big events tonight. The first is for a great cause. Palmetto Health Foundation’s 20th Annual Festival of Trees starts with a gala at 6:30. The weekend long event showcases decorated trees, wreaths, tabletop trees, centerpieces and garlands that are all available for auction. Cookies for Santa platters painted by current and former patients of Children’s Hospital will also be featured in the silent auction. Auction items can be previewed at the gala and secured at the special gala take home price that evening. Tickets are $125. Festival of Trees will be open to the public Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm at no charge.
The gala ends at 10, so you really could go to the second event, also for a good cause: Your Social Life and Fun Having. Stir Magazine is hosting an absinthe party. It starts at 8 pm, but you could probably get away with being a few minutes or hours late, because it lasts until…whenever it ends. There will be all sorts of French surprises and the evening promises to be a blast. You can really cut loose, because safe transportation home is included in the price of admission. Grab a friend or ten, get glam and party like a Parisienne! (Psssst…prices have been lowered a bit to $57 per individual, $93 per couple. Shop Tart Money Saving Tip: Make a girlfriend your plus one. You don’t have to bee seeing each other to save a few bucks.)
In other news…
- From now until December 24th, Weathers is offering 25% off everything in stock. Ladies, you have no excuse not to buy him something fab. Guys, you have no excuse not to fancy up your holiday look.

- Charliemack is having a Thanksgiving sale - 30% off one item. Might be a good time to pick up your New Year’s Eve party dress!
- Coplon’s is hosting a Temple St. Clair trunk show today. Take a break to go look at beautiful jewelry and check out the sale on all fall and winter clothes and shoes while you’re there.
- Today is the last day of Belladea’s Anniversary Sale - 20% off everything in the store!
- Mary is offering 25% off everything in stock. Whee!
- Strobler is offering 15% off and no tax on absolutely everything (custom and in stock merchandise). You know that party you’re having? Guess what? You seriously need to get end tables so people don’t have to balance a drink and a plate of food. Seriously!

- The All Local Farmers’ Market is tomorrow morning, from 8 am until noon, at Rosewood Market. If you haven’t been yet, that’s just silly. Best deal in town.

- As always, Garibaldi’s will be open for Thanksgiving dinner (and it will be amazing, no doubt!) If you know of other restaurants that will be open, please contact the Shop Tart and let her know - she’d be glad to spread the word!

Who’s Going to Vista Lights?
Filed Under Babies and Children, Beauty, Clothes, Eat and Drink, Great deal, Home, Men, Sale, Sip and Shop | Leave a Comment
There’s something about Vista Lights that just feels festive. The Shop Tart can finally embrace the chill in the air instead of whining about it. In fact, Vista Lights is the perfect excuse to pick up a sweater or three to layer for warmth. Pedestrians can roam free on closed streets, enjoying food, drinks, art, performance, fashion…everything the Shop Tart loves! Vista Lights begins at 5 pm, the perfect time to bring the kids (if everyone has finished his homework, of course.) They’ll love performances by the Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker Bon-Bons and National Champions Double Dutch Forces jump rope team. Santa Claus will be under the canopy on Lincoln Street for kids who like to get a jump on list making. At 7 pm, Mayor Bob Coble will light the Vista tree, located in front of the River Runner Outdoor Center (you know, the place with all the Kayak-y-looking things across from Goga.)
The kids might also enjoy a trip to Gervais and Vine, for a Beaujolais Nouveau tasting party. They won’t be able to drink the wine, but Emmanuel the Crêpier will be under the tent, along with all sorts of French stuff, like berets, food and accents. Children and adults go nuts for his chocolate crêpes…and honey…and savory… Just remember the Shop Tart’s Motto: Being a parent means always having a designated driver. No joke.
The Shop Tart, a vain old bird, is looking forward to the debut of SmashBox Cosmetics at the J Thomas Salon. In fact, that may be her first stop, since they’re offering free make-up application - a great way to get glam without going home between work and Vista Lights. And they have free samples - get there early to snap them up! At 7 and 8:15, don’t miss Bellavista Bridal’s fashion show. Yup, even if you aren’t a bride. It might not be the height of seasonal fashion (everyone loves a bride, right?), but there will be performances by Columbia’s contemporary dance company, Unbound. They are fab!
Horse-drawn carriages and the Captain Telegram trolley will be leaving regularly from the entrance to the State Museum. There will be plenty of food to sample and art to see. There’s something about Vista lights - maybe it’s the stores staying open outside of normal business hours, kind of like seeing your teacher at the grocery store when you’re in first grade.
Shop Tart Tip: When you get there, hunt down a detailed map, available in numerous spots, so you don’t miss a thing!
In other news…
- Belladea is having their annual anniversary sale - 20% off everything in the store, today and tomorrow only. They just unpacked a new shipment of Trina Turk!
- In case you can’t wait until 5 pm and want to get a jump on the fun: The Gourmet Shop is hosting a Beaujolais Nouveau tasting this afternoon, from 3 to 6 pm. Call for reservations - entrance is $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Certain Champagnes and Rosés are still on sale.
- Today is the last day to get 20% off at Just the Thing and M Boutique - don’t miss your chance to complete your holiday wardrobe at a discount!

Look of the Week!
Filed Under Bags, Beauty, Clothes, Eat and Drink, Good Cause!, Great deal, Home, Jewelry, Look of the Week, Men, New Shop Opening, Sale, Sip and Shop | Leave a Comment
If you thought you felt a chill yesterday, you were right. It was the coldest November 18th in recorded history, according to that cute Brooks Garner. Maybe you need a new sweater or three to combat that chill. And a pretty jacket or cape to layer over it. M Boutique, home of high fashion priced for normal budgets, is the place to go, especially today and tomorrow. They’re having a two-day sale - 20% off everything, including denim. With oodles of sweaters priced under $100 (even less with the discount!), M Boutique is the Shop Tart’s pick for today.
It was also her pick yesterday, for the Look of the Week! Andrea Coe, Charlotte native and recent graduate of USC, is one of owner Emily’s favorite employees. She keeps her girlish figure by waiting tables at the Publick House (which, incidentally, has possibly the finest salad in all of Columbia. Try it with the lemon pepper tilapia!) With her brand new degree in Fashion Merchandising, though, Andrea’s looking to consolidate and narrow it down to one 9 to 5 gig (or 8 to 6!) If you need a fab new employee, stop by M or the pub and say hello. Without further ado, here she is. The dress, inspired by Sex and the City (trés Charlotte, played by local girl Kristin Davis), has an adorable bow in the front that doesn’t quite show up in the picture. Sheath dresses are universally flattering, n’est-ce pas? The cape, lined in fun black and white satin, is the perfect thing to keep your shoulders warm without messing up the line of your outfit. The Shop Tart insisted on showing that bag, which may or may not match the outfit, depending on who you ask, because it’s only $86! Someone do the math - quick - 20% off of $86 is…practically free, for a bag.
Andrea’s boots save the outfit from being entirely too girly. Love them! Now, the Shop Tart has a few suggestions on how to use that 20% off. This black vest sweater is too cute.
Here’s another great bag, and that tunic would look great with leggings and flats, or boots or jeans.
And no shop carries more color than M, so don’t be drab. Add some bright tops or a dress to your winter wardrobe!
In other news…
- Don’t forget to make a stop at Bohemian and Bohemian Home from 6 to 9 pm to enjoy a night of food, wine and fun. There will be a wine tasting at Bohemian Home and beauty consultations at Bohemian. And…discounts of 20-75% at both stores. The Shop Tart loves food, wine, discounts and beauty stuff, don’t you? Bohemian has more fun discounts planned for December. Don’t forget they have fab clothes for fellas, too!
- Just the Thing wants to help you accessorize all of your holiday looks and save on chic gifts for all your girlfriends. They’re offering 20% off today and tomorrow.
- The Devine Street Merchants want you to make a donation to Epworth Children’s Home. Visit any participating merchant, make your donation and you’ll be entered to win a fabulous prize!Even if you don’t win, you’ll get a tax deduction for the donation - and we can all use that, n’est-ce pas?
- Ross Holmes will be at Dianne’s tonight, starting at 7:30. Sounds like a great place to go after the Bohemian event. Lorrie Rivers returns to Dianne’s Friday night.
- Unforgettable Jewelry, a new Devine Street shop, is having a Grand Opening celebration on Saturday. Go take a look!

Send yourself flowers, just because you’re so pretty!
Filed Under Bags, Clothes, Eat and Drink, Good Cause!, Home, Sale, Shoes, Sip and Shop | Leave a Comment
The Shop Tart and her sister-in-law spotted the most gorgeous bouquet of flowers at the Gourmet Shop last week, a creation of the Blossom Shop just down the street, bien sûr!
Striking, n’est-ce pas? The flowers were a gift to the waitress in the background, who had just returned from a European tour. Much to her disappointment, the Shop Tart’s sister-in-law had not, in fact, just returned from Europe, and was instead looking forward to spending the weekend alone while her husband worked. She felt sure he meant to send her flowers to apologize, so she did it herself.
The Shop Tart and her sister-in-law headed to the Blossom Shop to see if one stylish bouquet could inspire another. While they waited, The Shop Tart took a quick peek around. In addition to gorgeous flowers, the Blossom Shop is chock-full of really fab stuff! There was nothing fishy about this lovely bud vase.
A group of white accessories is always trés chic, don’t you think? Love this monkey and the flowered vase behind it.
There were plenty of flowers left for a gorgeous bouquet for her sister-in-law.
She even wrote herself a note (Shop Tart Tip: When sending flowers to yourself, always include a thoughtful note!)
“Sorry I have to work all weekend. I hope these flowers make you feel better. Love, G.”
She had the flowers delivered to make them more special (and in the hope she might forget she had ordered them - mothers can do that - their brain cells are shot.) Some husbands are just so thoughtful!
In other news…
- Need a personal elf for the holidays? The ladies at Kicks will help you make your list and check it twice. Then they’ll contact the gift giver and offer gift wrapping and delivery. This holiday season, give your significant other the gift of not having to shop for you! Aren’t you thoughtful?
- Starting tomorrow, M Boutique is having a Two Day Sale - 20% off everything in the store, including denim! Wednesday and Thursday only.
- Palmetto Health Foundation’s 20th Annual Festival of Trees starts with a gala on Friday evening at the new freestanding Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital located at 7 Medical Park, Palmetto Health Richland, in Columbia. The weekend long event showcases decorated trees, wreaths, tabletop trees, centerpieces and garlands that are all available for bid. Cookies for Santa platters painted by current and former patients of Children’s Hospital will also be featured silent auction items. Auction items can be previewed at the gala on Friday, 6:30-10 p.m. and secured at the special gala take home price that evening. Tickets are $125. Festival of Trees will open to the public Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm at no charge.
- This evening from 6 to 9 pm, head to Frame of Mind for “As You Wish” and enjoy peppermint martinis and fashion. Come see fab outfits by LaRoque, one of a kind Nana Bags, super chic eyewear from Frame of Mind and original jewelry from A Degree of Elegance. 10% of all proceeds will benefit the Providence Heart Institute. Have a good time for a good cause!
- The Shop Tart joined two Facebook groups recently: I Have a Nana Bag, Why Don’t You? and The All-Local Farmers’ Market. While you’re there, stop by and say “hi” to the Shop Tart on Facebook.
- For your information: The Congaree Grill Wild Game Wine Dinner has been rescheduled. It will be held December 2nd.
