How to Spend Labor Day Weekend in Town.
Filed Under Clothes, Eat and Drink, Home, Sale, Shoes, Sip and Shop | Leave a Comment
The Shop Tart hopes you started your weekend early - by watching the game or at least going to a party where you pretended to watch it. The Shop Tart loves football - the parties, the liquor, the people, the parties, the bonding, the parties - any excuse for a party, because parties are a great time to dress up and the Shop Tart loves to dress up! For those of you who aren’t football aficionados, but want some intelligent things to say about it, she highly recommends Seth Emerson’s Gameday blog. Somehow, he manages to make things clear and interesting, even to the Shop Tart. Wonder if he’s single. Ladies?
Now for the Rest of the Weekend.
Friday:
- Mr. Friendly’s is featuring specials this week inspired by tailgating food, with their own sophisticated spin, of course! Go for lunch - and a chance to spot everyone you know in Columbia - and try the Beer Braised Bratwurst with Housemade Sauerkraut & Creole Mustard. In the mood for something lighter? Citrus & Pepper Grilled Shrimp with Cucumber-Tomato Pasta Salad, Mixed Greens, Blue Cheese & Tomato-Cilantro Vinaigrette sounds delicious!
- Kick it off this afternoon at Simply Savory’s free wine tasting, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Take a look at their developing space - the former Ben and Jerry’s - where they’ll have a cafe soon. The Shop Tart can’t wait, because she’s a huge fan of their pimento cheese and feels sure the cafe will be a hit!
- Feeling artsy? Check out if Art Gallery’s new show today in the Vista. The opening reception is from 5 to 10 pm. Works by Roland Albert, Mary Gilkerson, Sjaak Korsten and Kees Salentijn will be featured. Call 238-2351 for more info.
- If you’re staying in the Vista, enjoy a light dinner on the patio at Gervais and Vine. The weather should be perfect.
- If you can make it this long, the Art Bar is the place to be for dancing on Friday nights, but it doesn’t really start happening until after 11. If you can stay awake, the music is eclectic, as is the crowd and you’ll have a blast!
Saturday
- Start your day the right way, with a class at City Yoga. There’s a class for men at 8 am - Mr. Shop Tart is a fan! The Level 1-1.5 class, for men and women, starts at 9. Namasté, y’all!
- After your class, do a little window shopping in Five Points and on Devine Street. If you can’t choose anything for yourself, you might want to get one of these from Kicks for the Shop Tart. Just sayin’.
- Work up an appetite while you’re shopping and head to the Gourmet Shop for a late lunch. Stick around for their $1 wine tasting from 2 to 5 pm. While you’re there, pick up a few snacks from the deli case for any Clemson parties you might be attending this evening, because…guess what…
- The Clemson Tigers kick off the season tonight at 8 pm, against Alabama. Go Tigers! If you are not so much of a sports fan, but your companion is, the Shop Tart highly recommends dinner at her favorite Sports Bar, Mr. Friendly’s. Sure, it isn’t known as a sports bar, but the bartender will usually be happy to put the game on the (unobtrusive) television and you can enjoy a great meal and keep up with the game. Great wine list, too…
- If football, eating out or having a party at home hold no interest for you, tonight is the last Summer Concert in Finlay Park. Local rock band Tokyo Joe will play from 7 to 10. Bring a picnic or buy food there.

Sunday is a day of rest. But you have to eat, right? Motor Supply Company has a phenomenal brunch. Grab a friend and the newspaper and enjoy!
In other news…
- Granger Owings is having their Last Chance Summer Sale through tomorrow. Unbelievable deals - go take a look!
- Strobler’s having a Labor Day Weekend Sale. 15% off everything full price, in stock or custom. Time to redecorate!
Happy Shopping!

The Ladies Who Lunch are alive and well.
Filed Under Eat and Drink, Sale, Shoes | Leave a Comment
Of course, they don’t just lunch - they work, they take care of children, they go to school - they do all sorts of things, really. But lunch is one of the most important, isn’t it? A lady won’t have the energy for any of those other important things without lunch! One of the Shop Tart’s favorite places to go with the ladies is Mediterranean Tea Room. Ladies like salads, and they have a great one. The Greek salad with chicken is on the menu, but they often have a special with grilled shrimp instead. The other day, the Shop Tart was there with her friend Kandie and her sister in law Virginia. They all got salads. Here’s Kandie’s (and her cute top!)
While they were there, they ran into Kitty Hoffman and Kristy Gibbs. Actually, Kitty almost ran into them, when she was trying to park her car on a slope, heading right for the patio where they were sitting. It was kind of scary and the Shop Tart made sure Kitty had put on her parking brake. Kitty’s on the left. She doesn’t look like a daredevil sort of driver, but you can never tell, can you?
The Tea Room isn’t just about ladies and salads, of course. Mr. Shop Tart has high praise for their cheeseburgers. The Shop Tart adores their Eggplant Pita Pizza and the Eggplant Appetizer. They also have (and this is very, very important) extremely cold sodas. Yum!
In other news…
- GO GAMECOCKS!!! Ahem. Maybe you didn’t know this, but their first game is tonight.
- The Shop Tart went to Kicks yesterday after lunch and they are fully stocked with gorgeous shoes for fall, in a variety of price ranges, as always. They also have quite a few things on sale. Hooray!
Happy Shopping!

Look of the Week!
Filed Under Clothes, Jewelry, Look of the Week, Sale, Sip and Shop | Leave a Comment
Whew! The Shop Tart is exhausted from last evening’s Dirty 30 Party at VanJean. The birthday girls didn’t look dirty at all - they looked gorgeous! Both of them were wearing bright blue. Susan’s dress was stunning (Oops! With all that Champagne In all the excitement, the Shop Tart forgot to ask who made it!) and the bright blue made her skin just glow! Speaking of glowing, Elizabeth barely looks like she’s expecting, but she is! In true VanJean style, she was wearing a Mint dress, with the belt a little higher than normal - she’s one of those pregnant ladies that manages to look like a maternity model. Gorgeous!
The Shop Tart couldn’t settle on just one Look of the Week, because everyone looked fabulous. These looks should help you plan your Fall party look - Take your pick! Without further ado…here’s one of birthday girl Susan and Melissa Blanchard. Melissa’s in a gorgeous chartreuse shift by Mint, wearing piles of gold and turquoise necklaces. Did you know necklaces are the new bangles? Wear as many as you like, ladies!
And here’s the other birthday girl, Elizabeth, in a Mint dress with an embellished belt. She’s standing with Kristy (of Tullulah fame), who’s wearing the Safari shift by Tibi.
Speaking of belts, embellished or otherwise, they’re big. A lot of dresses come with belts - and not ugly belts, like the one that came with your First Day of School dress in the second grade. Nope, these are gorgeous and you’ll wear them with more than just the dress they came with. Christina’s dress in the photo below, by Elijah, came with that gorgeous embellished belt. Kindall’s top is by Tibi (the Shop Tart is sure of that, because she has the same one, as does a certain lady ruler of the gourmet scene in Columbia, as does Kelly Ripa.) Later in the evening, she added a lace wrap by Phillip Lim to the look. So pretty!
And the last shot of the evening - but maybe not the last glass of Champagne! - Melissa and Allison, in a gorgeous blue dress with embellished shoulders, reviewing the evenings photos…
You know what the Shop Tart says…never miss a party. And she’s sure glad she didn’t miss this one. Happy Birthday, Susan and Elizabeth! And thank you all for a lovely time!
In other news…
- Don’t forget Frame of Mind’s art opening this evening, showcasing the work of Jen Phelps. Wine, cheese and art. What’s not to love? 5 to 8 pm.
Happy shopping!

A long, long time ago, when the original 90210 was popular*, the Shop Tart read a blurb in some magazine or another that said all the young celebs, including Tori Spelling, were shying away from bold nail polish and using more natural colors, including Tori’s favorite, “Natural Pink” by Chanel. The Shop Tart rushed right out and bought it. She was faithful for many years. Sure, there were times when she wanted a bolder look, and she indulged, but Natural Pink was her standard. One of the first things she sees in her wedding pictures is the subtle glow of Natural Pink. With just a swipe, it made her nails look clean and sophisticated, the white crescents at the tips whiter. You’re probably planning on rushing out and buying it right now, aren’t you? Well, allow the Shop Tart to save you a trip to the mall…because they discontinued it. Why? Who knows. And who cares, because the Shop Tart was at Pout the other day, reminiscing about the loss of her favorite polish** and Lisa Seth showed her another color, a color so similar as to be indistinguishable from her beloved Natural Pink.
The color is Baby Love, from the Lippmann Collection. Lisa herself was a fan of Natural Pink, so she understood the Shop Tart’s pain. She’d been burned before, by other polishes that looked right in the bottle, but transformed on her nails, so the Shop Tart wasn’t ready to let herself feel joy. She rushed home and tried it and decided to feel tentatively joyous when it appeared to be the same. She was tentative because, in the past, she’s had some near successes with polishes that looked good in the bottle, looked good on her nails and turned yellow after a day. Guess what? Drum roll…Baby Love is still gorgeous after three days!
Why such an obsession over a neutral polish? Well, neutrals are perfect because they last and last, giving your nails a professional look long after other colors or even a bare nail would let you down. Little chips don’t show. A pedicure can last for weeks. A manicure? Not so much. Natural shades will often last until the nails grow and you have to re-apply. Besides, if neutrals weren’t important, why would the Lippmann Collection have so many? Hm?
Baby Love, by the way, is the one in the picture above with no spare bottles behind it. Lisa has assured the Shop Tart (who scored the last bottle - hooray!) that she’s ordering more. You might want to put your name on the call list for its arrival. While you’re at it, you might want to put your name on the Tarte 4 Day Stay list. It’s sold out again, on back order everywhere, and the Shop Tart can’t recommend it highly enough!
Neutral isn’t always the right choice for nails, so please be assured that there are plenty of other fab colors in the Lippmann Collection. The polish is great - it goes on smooth and doesn’t seem to chip easily. And…psssst…it’s even a few dollars cheaper than Chanel…

What are you doing this weekend?
Filed Under Eat and Drink, Home, Sip and Shop | 1 Comment
Well, if you don’t know yet, the Shop Tart has a few suggestions for you. Surprised? Kick off the weekend with a free wine tasting at Simply Savory, today from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. While you’re there, grab some crackers, smoked Gouda pimento cheese and a can of mixed nuts to serve at the After Party at your place.
Before the After Party, you have choices. You could hit Hunter Gatherer for a light dinner before a movie at the Nickelodeon. “Brick Lane” is showing tonight. If a movie’s not your thing, go to Baan Sawan. Sure there are other options out there, but having dinner at the bar with Sam, co-owner and wine connoisseur, is a great way to unwind. The Shop Tart recommends the Pad Ginger…or the Larb Salad…or any of the specials…and the Tod Mun appetizer…never mind, it’s all good. Just make sure you ask Sam for a wine or beer recommendation. He is full of knowledge and interesting anecdotes!
Saturday morning, head over to Rosewood Market for the All Local Farmers’ Market. If you were, ahem, over-served Friday night, the breakfast will cure you. Grits from Anson Mills, Wil-More Farms eggs and sausage from Caw Caw Creek, served with a side of strong, hot coffee. It’s all local and it’s only four dollars. What’s not to love? After breakfast, check out the goods. The Shop Tart never leaves without several cartons of Wil-More Farms eggs, as many loaves of Heather’s artisan bread as she can carry, loads of fresh vegetables and a huge bunch of flowers from Floral and Hardy Farm. Name a price and ask Donna to create a bouquet for you. She’s an artist - and an amazing gardener!
Lay low this afternoon. Go to the gym. Take a nap. Do a little shopping (always the Shop Tart’s choice!) Have a late lunch at the Gourmet Shop (Seasonal Green Salad with a side of smoked salmon, if you like). If you’re still there at 2 pm, enjoy their $1 wine tasting. This week, they’re pouring a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Malbec and two surprises. Don’t forget to take a look at the cheese case. In addition to the usual fabulous selection, there are lots of new choices. Pick out a few and have a few people in tonight for wine and cheese.
In fact, why not have a casual dinner party? In the Shop Tart’s experience, most people overthink the idea of having people in. No one, in the history of the world, has ever been invited somewhere and said on the way home,
“Why did those horrible people invite us in? DId you notice that the house wasn’t perfectly clean and that the dinner wasn’t perfect? And can you believe they asked us to bring an appetizer? Ugh! Their hand towels weren’t even ironed!”
People like being invited to your home - they do! And if you really care about crisp hand towels, but hate to iron, go get some cute ones at Gibson’s. The Shop Tart loves the tan linen ones with chocolate brown initials on them. You will have to iron them next time you use them, though.
No need to make dinner difficult. Grab some ready made pizza crust from the grocery store and make pizza with fresh vegetables you bought at the Farmers’ Market. The Shop Tart recommends fried eggplant pizza, not as labor intensive as you might think! If you don’t want to cook at all (understandable!), grab a few things from the case at the Gourmet Shop - maybe chicken salad, pasta salad and pâté. Don’t forget the baguette! You can make a salad from the fresh greens you picked up at the market this morning (that’s not really cooking, is it?)
Sunday morning, after church of course, grab a newspaper and head across the bridge for brunch at Cafe Strudel. The Shop Tart recommends the Hangover Hash Browns, whether you need them or not. Strudel has everything you could possibly want for brunch, from smoked salmon on a bagel to pancakes.
After you eat, take a walk by the river and relax, because you have a full week of shopping, sipping and socializing ahead!

Award Winning Salad…and Burritos!
Filed Under Beauty, Clothes, Eat and Drink, Good Cause! | Leave a Comment
When the Shop Tart needs a quick, healthy and abso-flippin-lutely delicious lunch, she heads to El Burrito for their award winning salad with chicken. As you may know, the Shop Tart is a salad junkie. She’s also a big eater, so the salad must have a lot more going on than lettuce. Meat, cheese and lots of colorful veggies make a salad a real meal. El Burrito piles it high with fresh tomatoes, tender shredded chicken and mozzarella, fresh herbs and owner Suzi Sheffied’s own amazing vinaigrette.
You can eat inside at the old-fashioned lunch counter, where you can read the Free Times or watch the talented staff prepare meals. El Burrito is located in a former Huddle House - how cool is that? The Shop Tart is a hug fan of making old structures new again. If the weather’s nice - which it almost always is in Columbia - you can eat outside, on a covered porch. The Shop Tart loves the decor and the people watching. Everyone - from fancy business people to lowly bloggers - loves El Burrito.
El Burrito is a great place for dinner, too (yes, they do have beer and wine!) Tonight, if you didn’t manage to score sold-out tickets to the Slow Foods Benefit Dinner at Terra, why not console yourself with burritos, bluegrass and beer on the back porch at El Burrito (ooh! Alliteration!) Late Spring through early Fall, they have bluegrass behind the restaurant every Thursday night. Fun! The Shop Tart hopes to see you there soon!

Look of the Week!
Filed Under Beauty, Clothes, Eat and Drink, Home, Jewelry, Look of the Week, Sale | 1 Comment
The Shop Tart is really excited about all the colors in stores for Fall - and you will be, too - if you aren’t already! M Boutique is full of color, right down to the peacock feathers in vases around the shop, the perfect complement to all those gorgeous blues, purples and yellows.
Emily Garrett, owner of M, and Angela Castro, who’s worked there for a year, agreed after only the slightest bit of badgering by the Shop Tart to show off a couple of fall looks. Angela, fresh back from an internship with Edun in New York, is a senior at USC, majoring in fashion merchandising. She’ll be a real pro after her internship at Edun and her job with Emily - who has years of experience as a buyer, although you wouldn’t know it from her youthful appearance. The Shop Tart hopes Angela has big, fashion-y plans for the future!
Angela is wearing a fab purple dress ($164) that would be great for a Rush party or holiday cocktails. The shoes are her own - peep toes are trés chic! Emily, a Look of the Week veteran, is wearing a stunning teal dress with a sheer over layer and shimmery slip underneath ($76). Those shoes are the Shop Tart’s, a pair of Stuart Weitzman tan patent wedges, purchased on sale of course! The dress would look great with a belt or as it is now - so old Hollywood glamor, n’est-ce pas? And, let’s say you’re a tiny little thing and need to take the waist in a little more, or you have a billowy dress you want to take in at the waist, without an obvious belt. Why not try the Invisibelt? It’s available at M and the Shop Tart thinks it’s really cool. The Invisibelt also works to cover the bulge from your jean’s snap under a tight sweater or t-shirt.
There’s so much to see at M right now, including a full table of big statement, lightweight earrings ($24 each.)
And, like it or not, football season is coming soon! The Shop Tart loves it and likes to show her enthusiasm by wearing Gamecock colors without sacrificing style. There’s plenty of Garnet and Black at M to suit her needs and yours.
And the Shop Tart can’t stop without giving you one more shot - a whole wall of every shade of purple under the sun - something for everyone!
In other news…
- Ross Holmes is at Dianne’s on Devine tonight. Time for Happy Hour!
- Pout will be at Kicks in Lexington tomorrow for a Susan Posnick makeup event. Call for an appointment.
- Summer Vietri is on sale at Cloud Nine, 50% off. The Shop Tart has this 39 inch long platter in gold - it looks beautiful filled with green apples. It’s around $80, with the discount.

High Fashion at Salty’s
Filed Under Clothes, Eat and Drink, Good Cause!, Great deal | Leave a Comment
Do you ever want to be that girl that looks effortlessly chic and sublimely original, without the empty wallet to go with your fab look? Well, the Shop Tart has always wanted to be That Girl. Once in a blue moon, for an hour or two, she comes close.
That Girl always manages to pick up the perfect vintage trench coat at a thrift store for a few dollars. The Shop Tart once scored an Aquascutum corduroy trench on EBay, but it wasn’t all that inexpensive and, frankly, it’s rather ugly and she’s never worn it. That Girl always has the perfect Hermes scarf, bought for her by a charming ex-boyfriend with whom she still corresponds…fondly. The Shop Tart doesn’t remember ever getting any presents from exes…and they haven’t even tried to find her on Facebook. That Girl has great shoes…okay, if That Girl ever told the truth, she’d have to admit the shoes weren’t cheap. Not that anyone is bitter or jealous or anything. Ahem.
Anyhow, every now and then, the Shop Tart does see something inexpensive, in an unexpected place, that she really loves. The other day, her two oldest children dragged her into Salty’s, where they abandoned her in favor of the super-cool staff, who was willing to answer every single question they had about skateboards and long boards and all sorts of other boards. She wandered off, because a shop is a shop and Salty’s is a fun one. It’s a great place to find flip-flops (Sanuks, Rainbows, Reefs and others), bikinis and cute canvas surfer girl bags. They have fab casual tops and pants for the beach or weekends spent on the soccer field with kids.
But that day, her eyes were drawn to something un petit peu plus chic. This mustard color is so, so in for Fall. The crochet detail is trés feminine, also key for the coming season. Don’t you love the hemstitch detail at the bottom? The Billabong dress, which the Shop Tart admits might be a shirt, would look great with skinny black jeans or opaque tights and boots. Someone very brave (and very chic!) could pair it with colored tights. Someone less brave who loves colored tights might want the black version, also available at Salty’s.
This fall and winter, girly details are in, but make sure you add some edgy touches to keep it from getting too frou frou!
In other news…
- Local artist (and creator of the Shop Tart’s super-cute logo!) Heather LaHaise was featured on Dog Art Today, a fab blog about…dog art, of course! Take a look. Heather’s work isn’t just for dog owners, either. It’s that good!
- Ross Holmes will be at Dianne’s on Devine tomorrow night, which makes it a perfect time to check out their new menu and enjoy a cocktail or three… And for the next four weeks, they’ll be giving away a $100 gift certificate every Friday. You can enter the drawing here. The Shop Tart feels a Ladies’ Cocktail Night coming on…
- Speaking of Ladies’ Night, are you a Wine Goddess? There’s a Wine Goddess dinner next Monday (August 25th) at Gervais and Vine. The party will benefit the children of St. Lawrence Place, so you can have a blast and do something good at the same time!

Beyoncé shops high-end designers’ resort collections a day before she jets to St. Bart’s. The rest of us, without access to her or Jay-Z’s credit cards, have to plan our winter vacation wardrobe more carefully, if we’re headed to an island at all! It’s time to pick up the last few summer bargains. Anything left in stores is priced to move. Sure, you might not find the best selection, but if they happen to have your size - and it has to be someone’s! - you’ll get an unbelievable deal. There are sale signs in almost every shop window. Even if you haven’t planned an island vacation this winter, don’t you think it’s only practical to pick up one or two things? Just in case you get invited somewhere warm. And if you don’t, why not host a “Summer in November” party? Everyone shows up in resort wear, throws their coats in the closet and sips Piña Coladas, even if it is a little chilly outside. You could find some fab cocktail glasses at Finleaf…
Here’s what’s happening soon…
- Did you miss the Sidewalk Sale at Kicks on Devine? Kicks of Lexington (located inside Lola) is having a sidewalk sale starting next Monday (August 25th) - prices are 40-80% off.
- You can still consign summer items at Revente until August 29th, although they will automatically be reduced 50% for the summer clearance sale, so you might want to save them until next spring. They begin accepting fall consignment on September 8th - so start looking through your closet!
- Thursday, Pout makeup artists will be at Kicks of Lexington to demonstrate makeup from Susan Posnick. Appointments recommended. Walk ins welcome. Call 803-957-8892 for reservations. If you’ve never been to a Pout makeup event before, don’t miss it! If you just can’t make it to Lexington, stay tuned for news about Pout’s upcoming Week of Beauty, September 22-27.
- Mark the Calender: Next Tuesday (August 26th) VanJean is having a “Dirty 30 Party” to celebrate Susan and Elizabeth’s thirtieth birthdays. They’re offering 30% off one Fall item - that day only. You might want to stop by this week and scope out the new collections, to see what you might want to nab next Tuesday! You can also register to win a $500 VanJean gift certificate and a Pout goodie bag! Not that you need any more incentive, but they’ll be serving dirty martinis and other refreshments that evening. Call 803-252-4339 for further information. The Shop Tart won’t miss this one!
- Coplon’s sale merchandise is pretty sparse, but not so sparse that the Shop Tart didn’t find a See by Chloé top at a rock bottom price. Actually, she found three..and a Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti dress. She only bought the one top, though, so the other two tops and the dress are still there - just for you!
- The other day, the Shop Tart visited Granger Owings for their amazing tent sale. They’ve sold a lot, but there’s plenty left and, gentlemen, the prices are unbelievable! Granger Owings has also recently added more clothes for ladies - they’re not included in the tent sale, but there were some beautiful, polished pieces for you professional ladies (or those of us who just want to look professional!)
- Thursday evening, you won’t want to miss this all-local benefit dinner at Terra. Hosted by Terra and Slow Foods Columbia, it’s a benefit to send local farmers Kristen and Ben Dubard of Five Leaves Farm to Terra Madre, a world food event in Italy. The Shop Tart and her husband will be there, of course. She might just need to do a little local shopping for something to wear…
