First things first. The Shop Tart is on her fourth day of Tarte’s Four Day Stay and…drumroll…wait for it…it’s still on! Now, she might have added another coat last night, if she had been going out, but didn’t, since she was curious to see how it held up. Believe the hype, ladies. The color has survived three nights of sleep, one nap, one workout, one day in the pool, numerous eye rubbings and at least seven washes. And a whole lot of South Carolina heat and humidity. Pretty cool.

In case you haven’t noticed, everyone’s on Facebook, even your mother. Thankfully, she took down those pictures of herself on Spring Break. The Shop Tart thinks it’s wonderful that the internet, which gets such a bad rap for making communication impersonal, is finally capable of bringing people together, locally! Here are just a few Facebook pages you might enjoy:

The Shop Tart This is obviously the most important one, and it goes without saying that the Shop Tart hopes you will become a fan of her page on Facebook. It makes her feel good to have fans!

Fall is coming and you know what that means for ladies in balmy South Carolina…warm weather clothes in cool weather colors! The Shop Tart stopped by Sophie Shoes yesterday and caught them unpacking Fall merchandise. There were too many cute things to count! Doesn’t Katie Hood, a rising Junior at Hammond School, look great in this newly arrived dress from Mary? The cotton dress (only $88.50!) would work right now, thanks to the fabric and short sleeves, with sandals. It could be worn through October with boots…or the adorable red shoes by Söfft ($118.50) shown here. The bright yellow bag by Big Buddha ($118.50) will be the perfect piece to add punch to your Fall wardrobe. Katie’s own hammered gold hoop earrings are from M Boutique.

Look of the Week!

Katie has been having a blast working at Sophie this summer and plans to come back on weekends once school starts. Sophie is offering 50% off all Summer shoes, except for “Last Pair” shoes. And those are all only $20! There are still a lot of great choices on sale and new things are arriving every day. In addition to all the new shoes, Sophie just got a shipment of Hobo clutches, bi and tri-fold, in great new colors for Fall. Make sure to put Sophie and Mary on your list for Tax Free Weekend!

Now, the Shop Tart is sure you are all dying to know how her Tarte Four Day Stay from Pout is holding up. Very well, thank you. It has now survived five face washings, two full nights of sleep and one short nap. The best thing about it is that she still looks like she has eyelashes when she goes to bed at night…and when she wakes up in the morning. This is the perfect product for coy newlyweds, who aren’t quite ready to unveil a totally natural face. Last night, the Shop Tart applied it to her lower lashes, too. Ooh la la!

In other news…

  • VanJean is having their Last Call clearance sale on Summer merchandise. Things are going fast, but there are plenty of things left, up to 75% off!

The Shop Tart hasn’t stopped batting her eyelashes since yesterday afternoon, when she first applied Four Day Stay, a new lash tint from Tarte. She read about it and knew she had to have it when she learned it was sold out all over the place. Pout just got a shipment and the Shop Tart rushed right in to get some. So far, it has survived one face washing and one night of sleep. She’ll keep you updated!

Every so often, the Shop Tart likes to bat her eyelashes over a burger at Mr. Friendly’s in Five Points. Because she likes to pretend she doesn’t eat carbs, she orders it with a salad instead of fries and removes the bun when it arrives at the table. Then she uses the bun when she’s finished so soak up the remaining salad dressing. So there. The other day, she got the French Quarter Burger, a delicious combination of blackened beef and Roasted Red Pepper Blue Pimento Cheese.

"Low Carb" French Quarter Burger at Mr. Friendly's

Her husband got the Friendly Burger with Pepper Jack Cheese and curly fries, which the Shop tart ate about half of!

Mr. Shop Tart's Burger at Mr. Friendly's

They ate in the bar, which is also one of their favorite dinner spots. In fact, they refer to it as their favorite sports bar, because of the little television. They don’t have a television at home*, but Mr. Shop Tart does occasionally want to see a game. His wife is happy to go along…as long as it’s Mr. Friendly’s, because the television is unobtrusive, the wine list is excellent and Justin, the bartender, is fun to talk to while her husband ignores her.

The outside tables are also great when the weather obliges. If you want to see everyone in Columbia, the main dining area is the place to be. The Shop Tart might just have to take her luscious eyelashes there this week to show them off!

Outside at Mr.Friendly's

Mr. Friendly’s always features the work of a local artist on the walls. The Shop Tart thinks this is a great idea for everyone! The artist gets exposure (and maybe a few sales!), the restaurant gets free décor and the patrons get something lovely to look at while they eat. Right now, Roger Hutchison’s art is featured, including this beautiful piece.

Roger Hutchison's art at Mr. Friendly's

If, by the way, you don’t happen to be craving a big, juicy burger, Mr. Friendly’s has plenty of other divine options. They have different menus at lunch and dinner, both excellent. They also have a list of specials every day. The Shop Tart would describe the food as Southern with Big City Edge…or maybe just really, really good!

In other news:

  • The Etcetera Trunk Show at Fortay ends August 4th. Don’t miss it!
  • The Bohemian had a whole tray of funky and fabulous jewelry on sale when the Shop Tart stopped by. Go take a look - there were plenty of pieces that would work for Fall.

The Shop Tart spent a lovely weekend in Washington D.C. with her sister - eating, drinking, laughing hysterically and shopping. Funny thing about the shopping, though. For some reason, things that are already on sale in Columbia are still being sold at full price in Washington. And there isn’t nearly as much new merchandise there as there is here. The Shop Tart was so looking forward to scoring some bargains and getting to preview some things not yet available here. Surely, she thought, the shopping is better in the big city. Au contraire! Columbia won by a mile. There was one place that didn’t disappoint, Hu Shoes in Georgetown. The Shop Tart always visits when she’s in town, just to see the new Chie Miharas. Those shoes are gorgeous. if you want to see them somewhere closer, stop by Worthwhile next time you’re in Charleston.

Every now and then, the Shop Tart comes across something that she just knows will work in her wardrobe…for the rest of her life. The Cartier Tank Française she wanted from the time she first saw it when she was ten years old, for example. She didn’t get that until she had been married ten years and carried three children. And learned how to hint without being overbearing*. Sometimes, it takes real effort to obtain those style-defining staples. And sometimes, it’s easy!

Belladea just got a brand new shipment of jewelry, including some gold-filled necklaces. These aren’t just any necklaces. They are…perfect. When the Shop Tart was there last, she saw two of them - one with five strands and one with just two. Both of them are very, very reasonably priced (the kind of thing you can buy for yourself without thinking too hard) and the Shop Tart wants one right now. The two-strand necklace can be looped around to look like three. How cool is that? The Shop Tart is afraid her photo doesn’t do them justice, so go see for yourself! This is the five strand necklace (the top loop is made up of three strands).

Five Strand Necklace and MM Couture Dress at Belladea

What? What did you say? You’re curious about the dress? More good news! That fab dress is by MM Couture and it’s only ninety-nine dollars. That’s right, less than a hundred bucks. Sure, it’s more than $100 after tax, but why not buy it next weekend, when clothes (among other school related things) will be tax free?

In other news…

  • The Shop Tart needs to scold every single one of you. She apologizes in advance if you’re offended, but she’s trying to save you from yourself. She was in VanJean the other day and saw an absolutely stunning dress on the rack by Tory Burch. Not a single one had been sold. The dress was marked 75% off. The Shop Tart, assuming it must look absolutely horrible on, tried it, just in case. It was much too small, so the tried another one, two sizes bigger than normal. Perfect fit! The reason the dress hadn’t sold could only be this: Some of you refuse to even try something if your “size” doesn’t fit. The Shop Tart has things in her closet from Size 0 to Size 14 - and they all fit. Different designers, different eras, different numbers. Don’t worry about the size. Worry about the fit. If it looks good, rock it! And…um…thank you for being afraid of that gorgeous dress, which the Shop Tart was able to pick up for a ridiculously low price!
  • Britton’s is having a Half Off Sale - Spring and Summer Merchandise.
  • Simply Savory is having another free wine tasting today, starting at 4:30 pm. They offer a 15% discount on mixed cases of wine, 5% more than the standard offered by most stores!
  • Strobler is offering 15% off all regular priced merchandise, in store or on order. They also have lots of sale items marked down even more. Time to redecorate?
  • Don’t miss the All-Local Farmers’ Market tomorrow, from 8 am until noon, at Rosewood Market. Nothing is more stylish than buying local, especially if it means getting flowers for a ridiculously low price that last for a ridiculously long time because they’re so fresh! The Shop Tart will be in Washington DC, visiting her sister and watching her oldest son sing in the National Cathedral with his church choir (Did that sound braggy? Maybe it was, just a little. He sings like an angel!), so could someone please pick up five dozen fresh eggs from Wil-More Farms for her? And two big bouquets of flowers? And some salad greens? And okra? And eggplant? Please?

Happy Shopping!

* Huh. She may have been a little bit overbearing, but all’s well that ends well, n’est-ce pas?

The Shop Tart likes the way she dresses. Doesn’t everyone? Like the way they dress, that is, not the way she dresses. As Kristy from Tullulah says,

“We all have different opinions. That’s how we get up in the morning and don’t all show up in the same outfit.”

True. In general, the Shop Tart dresses for herself and herself only. Every now and then, though, her family gets together and makes fun of her. Aren’t families great? They’re always there for you! Recently, she was really excited about a new look. She had a few small doubts listening to herself describe the new look to her sister, “…floral short-shorts…” didn’t sound so fabulous without a visual. Never one to shy away from a fashion mistake, she wore them anyway, with platform sandals from Sophie Shoes and a cute top from Britton’s recent sale. The Shop Tart is nothing if not brave.

Her children approved, sort of. One of them tried to be polite. “I think you look cool,” he said magnanimously, “but some people might laugh at you.” How right he was. Responses varied, and none of them were resounding endorsements.

“They’re alright. And you always choose such…um…interesting shoes.”

“Those would look good on mom if they were longer.”

“Those look like boxer shorts.”

“Really nice boxer shorts, though!”

So, the Shop Tart wants to know…what do you really think of her outfit? She’d rather hear the truth from a fashionable bunch (that would be you, dear readers) than her unenlightened family. And be honest! The poll is anonymous. And you won’t hurt her feelings, because she isn’t all that sensitive! After you answer the poll, please feel free to leave comments or suggestions. Without further ado, here it is…

The gorgeous dress with a black sash next to the Shop Tart, by the way, is from LaRoque. Definitely worth stopping by, as most things in the store are 20-75% off right now. Tullulah also has a great sale rack and plenty of new things, including a gorgeous white cotton nightie by Eberjey.

The Shop Tart begs your forgiveness. The Look of the Week will be a little late, because she got distracted by her very own adorable baby. He’s turning two this week and is moving full speed ahead towards little boyhood. *Sniff* As her third - and probably last - child, he has more toys than any child needs. So what’s a mother to do when it’s birthday time? Well, since you asked…

Furniture! The Shop Tart stumbled on this fab zebra print lounge chair ($199) at Bohemian Home the other day and had to have it. Although it’s built for a child, it’s plenty roomy enough for an adult. She can already picture herself in it, sipping a fancy cocktail and telling one witty story after another, her long legs casually laid across the front of the chair, crossed at the ankles*. And it swivels!

Zebra Print Child's Lounge Chair at Bohemian Home

Although that particular chair is currently in the Shop Tart’s kitchen, full of toddler, don’t worry, they can order more. If Zebra print isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other fabrics to choose from. The chair is the perfect size for a child who likes to curl up with a good book…or an adult who likes to lounge around and chat with friends! You can also see the chair here, shown next to a super chic child’s table and chairs.

Bohemian Home has plenty of pieces that are child friendly, but not childish. The Shop Tart has always hated the idea of sacrificing personal style just because one has a child or two. In fact, don’t we owe it to our children to show them the way? Do you want to be responsible for an adult who decorates his home in a Winnie the Pooh motif? She loved these dining chairs, priced very reasonably (if you’ve ever shopped for dining chairs) at $119, and available in a variety of colors, including black, natural wood and red, a great accent color!

Red Dining Chairs at Bohemian Home

The Shop Tart loved these mixed media pieces. They’d look great in a child’s room - or yours. They can also be custom ordered. You provide the photograph and the artist incorporates it into an individual piece!

Mixed Media at Bohemian Home

Here are a couple larger examples, shown above some of the gorgeous modern bedding available at the Bohemian.

Mixed Media and Bedding at Bohemian Home

The store was packed with fun and sophisticated things for your home. You’ll have to stop by and see for yourself, because the Shop Tart can’t possibly show you all her favorites here. But how about just one more? these chairs, priced at $129, would look great on the patio or in the kitchen. They’re perfect for the outdoors or messy toddlers, because they’re made of very sturdy plastic so you can hose them off as often as necessary!

Plastic Dining Chairs at Bohemian Home

Bohemian Home is one to watch…store managers Kim and Tom just got back from market, where they ordered plenty of mad hip holiday decorations and gifts!

* When the Shop Tart “pictures” things, as opposed to them actually happening, her stories are all very witty and her legs are very, very long.

Long distance relationships can be really hard. You constantly wonder if it’s worth it. In the case of the Shop Tart’s (now) husband, it was worth the inconvenience of traveling, because he was really hot and laughed at all her jokes*. In the case of her favorite eye shadow however, only available at a mall far, far away, the relationship had to end. Several years ago, at a wedding in Italy, one of the Shop Tart’s most sophisticated friends was helping the bride with her makeup. All the ladies in the room gasped in awe when she produced an eye shadow from her makeup bag purported to be universally flattering. They continued to oooh and ahhhh as they tried the shadow, one by one, on their multi-hued faces. The Shop Tart fell in love, as one tends to do in Italy at weddings held on big, old Italian estates when the wine is flowing like, well, wine. The relationship lasted for years.

But, as these things go, the spark flickered. The Shop Tart’s gaze wandered, especially when her old love was out of town and she needed comfort. She wasn’t really ready to break up, but she was willing to experiment. She realizes this wouldn’t be quite fair if her love had been, you know, a human, but eye shadows don’t have feelings so it wasn’t really cheating. Right? Today, the breakup became final. She took the dregs of her old flame to Pout to find a replacement. And no, darling, you may not take your soon-to-be ex out on the town in order to compare him to whatever else might be available. That would be…tacky.

She experimented with several different shadows. She was short on time, which made the experience sort of like Speed Dating (which she does not endorse, by the way, for humans. Give the guy a chance. At least have dinner with him. The Shop Tart didn’t notice her husband’s charms for years, because she was just too immature!) Speed Dating, however, doesn’t include a guide who scoped out all the men ahead of time and leads you to someone appropriate. The ladies at Pout knew as soon as they saw the Shop Tart’s soon-to-be ex that Sue Devitt was the way to go. There were several options, and after experimenting, she chose Electric Sheen Eye Shadow in Eze. Meet the Shop Tart’s new love…

Sue Devitt Electric Sheen Eye Shadow in

Isn’t he gorgeous? And the Shop Tart doesn’t need an exclusive relationship, so feel free to claim him for yourself!

While you’re in Pout, you might as well pick up that other universally flattering product, Nars Blush in…ahem…Orgasm. It’s aptly named. Just try it. And they don’t have it yet, but they’ve ordered a product the Shop Tart has been dying to try: Tarte’s 4 Day Stay. It’s a lash stain that lasts four whole days, keeping the lashes smooth, supple and visible the entire time. It’s sold out all over the place, but Pout will be getting it, so keep checking. And let the Shop Tart know if you get to it before she does!

As much as the Shop Tart loves Columbia, she likes to get out of town occasionally. One of her favorite places to go is Litchfield Beach. The ocean is lovely and parties with neighbors are always a blast, but the Shop Tart and her husband, parents of three darling, energetic boys, need a little time away from their vacation. At least once during each trip to the beach, they pawn off the children on doting grandparents, unsuspecting friends or a well paid babysitter and sneak away to Perrone’s Market. Perrone’s isn’t a typical beach restaurant. They don’t offer buckets of steamed seafood*, they don’t have hush puppies and, as far as she can tell, they don’t sell shots of liquor. They do sell everything a girl like the Shop Tart wants: food, wine, coffee, fancy olive oil, to-go stuff for parties, chocolate. What else is there, really?

They sell plenty of wine by the bottle, and they offer three wines a day by the glass. The Shop Tart and her husband love spending a couple of hours there in the afternoon with a bowl of mussels, a hunk of cheese, a small loaf of fresh baked ciabatta bread and a glass (or three!) of wine. Speaking of the mussels, if you ever have a chance, you really must try the Thai Red Curry version at Perrone’s. They are so tender, they’ll melt in your mouth. And the curry seasoning is a perfect blend of coconut milk, lemongrass, chilies, cilantro and lime. Here is Mr. Shop Tart, patiently waiting to dig in while his wife takes a picture of his food. Notice the white-knuckled grip on his wine glass as he tries to control himself! Like his shorts? The Shop Tart found them at Surf the Earth, her favorite store on Pawley’s Island!

Mr. Shop Tart at Perrone's, Litchfield Beach

They also love running into people from home at Perrone’s. It’s comforting (and a really good way to find out who else is at the beach that week and where the next party is!) One of the nicest things about the beach is that pants are optional. You would never, for example, go to the Gourmet Shop in a bathing suit, see-through shirt and no pants**. Just last week, the Shop Tart and her husband were seated outside of Perrone’s when two ladies from town drove up, got out of the car, greeted them and walked into the shop to pick up a to-go order…all without pants! Their cover-ups, of course, were darling. And they had a very good excuse: they had already finished a bottle of Prosecco that day. It was around three in the afternoon. If that isn’t a reason to skip pants, what is?

So…next time you’re at the beach, stop by Perrone’s. If you see the Shop Tart, say hello and join her for a glass of wine. If you don’t see her, please pick up the following:

  • 3 loaves of ciabbatta.
  • 1 container Shrimp and Corn Dip.
  • 3 bottles of whatever white wine they’re serving that day.
  • 1 bottle of Allessi Lemon Olive Oil.
  • 3 or 4 of the cookies at the counter.
  • 1 dried saucisson.
  • Anything else you see that she might like…

In other news…

  • If you didn’t get tickets to the Gourmet Shop’s sold out Bastille Day tasting, stop by tomorrow from 2-5 pm for their regular tasting. And don’t forget to reserve your spot at the August 1st tasting, led by wine expert J.P. Chambas and featuring some very fancy French wines…

* Not that the Shop Tart doesn’t love buckets of steamed seafood! But that’s a treat to be shared with her children, at Flo’s Place in Murrells Inlet.
